And indeed it is true Yes even f. f greater in extent than the Bil 3 t land the influence of whose r people has been felt over the whole earth earth- Duchesne county t has as many square miles as Rhode Island and Delaware together together together to- to gether and is half as large as the nation of Wales in Europe Its latent wealth cf of mineral cannot be measured measured- Its mighty streams can furnish light heat and power for an unlimited population population lation lation- These same streams after after after af af- af- af ter turning the mills and anI lighting lighting lighting light light- ing the houses can be guided thru canals to the farms of the people With but a dim prophetic eye one can see these fertil valleys teeming with their multitudes of people but a few years hence All industries developed and busy people hurrying hither and thither thithi thith thith- i er in the the- various activities of life What is the importance of the picture Just this To produce produce of the school school- This life It is edu- edu I in its truest sense to prepare the coming citizens of this inland country to do the thing that is to be done It is the mission of the teacher above all else to leave with the pupil a desire to know and fill his place in his community community- The truth is we are likely to train boys and girls in figures and facts without awaking in them an idea dea of their relation to the country in which they must spend their lives or even suggesting the possibilities around them But this is not all The parent and citizen alike have their share of the responsibility responsibility- VI We e I have allowed the school to become become become be be- come isolated It is an institution institution institution tion by itself There is little or orno Q no relation now existing between school and home In school the J childs child's ld's lif life is on one thing n at ho home e it is another another- Until that union is re-established re or perhaps I better established where home and school are one in the childs child's training The effi efficiency of the teacher is impaired Parents citizens go to the school school- Offer suggestions suggestions- Tell fell the teacher your hopes and ideals for your boy or girl girl- Help him to discern their bent and inI in inclination inclination in- in I if you would have them I succeed You owe this duty to your children you owe it to the community community- le Now fellow trustees what are N you doing to rid yourselves s of the sins of the coming generation generation generation genera genera- tion For sin comes in the main as a result of bad training I shall venture a suggestion or two It is none too early to begin begin begin be be- gin to find and engage your c teachers for I ext seasons season's hire him again before he ic gets away Teachers are like human beings treat them right and they will give you better service service- I should like to suggest that we are paying hundreds of dollars dollars dollars doll doll- ars in this county every year to train new teachers we train them one year let lct them go and begin on another new one again As much as possible let the teachers get their training in I training school but if you have drilled them one year and they give you good service why take the chan chance e of a change Cities and consolidated districts dont don't hire uncertified and untrained teachers why should we I should like to see this county filled with good efficient teachers and nd then d demand mand of them them- the best they have I have a number of topics I should like to discuss with the people thru the columns of this paper if I am granted the lege and you can read the articles arti arti- cles cles- clesI I assure you I feel my un- un un-I un preparedness to
