Omaha We watched It come from the southwest and destroy Ralston Then it came toward South Omaha nearly to that cemetery west of of us and then turned toward Omal Omaha aIt a. a It moved slowly I believe I could i outrun it on a good road but It was sp spinning nning very fast It looked like a c column lumn of smoke on a clear lear Jd day clay y going straight up and spreading out ut at the top There was no norain rain or lightning InthIs in inthis inthis this cloud and we were not a abit bit bIta a afraid of it If it had come our way we would have gone down the street a coup couple o oai of ai blocks and been clear of its path I think when It it was going across tho the prairie it was about feet in diameter diameter diameter eter at the ground and kept spreadIng spread spread- Ing lug out as it left the ground just as smoke will do on a clear day It It followed the low ground and went around the hills but It destroyed destroy destroy- ed everything in Its path It struck Omaha just north of us and cut a path through the tho city for three or four miles and from tram two to five fhe or six blocks wide It took them just as it came to them them-rit made no difference about the size or how they were built whether brick stone or frame You can can see houses that have every very piece O of humber lumber lumber lum hum ber berin in them broken and big native trees pulled up bodily from the ground There are big houses on the edge of ot the path that nave every window gon gone and all the furniture and other contents gone It looks as though the cyclone e sucked everything out of some of at the houses I saw one two-story two house that had been lifted up and the first story carried carried car car- ried ned away and the top-story top and roof set down nearly on the spot where it was before th the storm There is one big house on the edge of at the path that had all the porch posts carried away but the porch is not damaged other other- wise The porch root roof is still sUll in place Put the th-e posts back and it Is as good goodas goods as s new Now and then you ou will see seea a house houseright houseright houseright right in the path that is not damaged much while all the others around are smashed mashed to kindling wood |
