H Wilcken last Thursday He waived preliminary preliminary preliminary prelim prelim- inary hearing Wardle is accused of breaking into th the New Palace Cafe and the Tavern early Thursday morning and stealing beer candy gum playing cards and a small amount of money about sixty cents in nickels and pennies Nearly Nearly Nearly Near Near- ly nil of the stolen goods were recovered recovered recovered re re- re- re covered from their cache south and west of the Strawberry bridge when officers were led to the cache by Wardle Implicates Salt Lake Men len Wardle had been released from the county jail last Tuesday ev eve eve- ning after serving a sentence of fifteen days at hard labor for drunkenness He was held for questioning Thursday in conn connection connection c- c tion with the robbery and after at first denying all knowledge of the crime he confessed that he assisted assist assist- ed two Salt Lake Lale City men in the burglary After this story had been disproved by Sheriff Dewey Meriwether Wardle admitted that he lie alone was responsible that he had broken into the Tavern demolished demolished demolished de de- de- de windows and the rear door because of a grudge he ie held against the proprietor since being questioned about a beer robbery which occurred on July Leaves Lea Blood Bloody Trail Taken to the Tavern and Palace Palace Pal Pal- ace cafe he showed officers how he had cut through window screens broken windows and sawed sawed sawed saw saw- ed a piece out of the rear door of the Tavern with a meat saw he ho had stolen from the cafe In breaking one of the windows he had cut his little finger and left lefta a trail of blood on everything he touched Including much of the stolen goods taken from both places His finger prints were clearly identified and blood in the cut on his finger clearly showed inthe in inthe inthe the prints taken at the sheriffs sheriff's office In rifling the cash register at the New Palace Wardle overlooked overlooked overlooked over over- looked 1500 which was covered by jy a piece of paper and got only sixty cents It took Wardle approximately four hours to complete the robbery robbery rob- rob bery and cache the stolen goods He made three trips he said first transporting his haul which included included ed two cases of beer to the telephone telephone telephone tele tele- phone building from there to the park jark and then to the tire brush near nearlie the lie river where it was recovered He will be tried in District court which convenes August |
