Show THOUGHTS ABOUT THINGS POLITICAL. PO-LITICAL. Senator' Chauncey M- Depow, ono of tho shallowest and consequently ono af the mcst transparent fakirs of the last past quarter century, has been a asked by a number of those who elect- 3d him to resign his seat in tho United Unit-ed States senate because of his alleged al-leged dishonesty, or to bo quite aroad, on account of his stealing oioney from an. Insurance company of which 'he was , a director. Depew never was anything but a' fairly clover fakir. His fame and reputation was mode by the newspaper correspond-3nts. correspond-3nts. It's a pity the gentlemen of the areas do not exorcise better discretion discre-tion in regard to tho men they make famous. By the way Depew Is on tho senate committee which Is to paBs on ho fitness of Seriator Heed Smoot of Utah to sit as a member of "the .most august law .making assembly in tho world." Chauncey has troubles of his own, It-appears and .If a committee to Inyestlgate him Is ' appplntejl Reed Smoot should1 In -all .fairness .bo a. member of ,6hat committee, ijf Chauncey's life, moral, business - and Hhlcal, or the life of any other member mem-ber of the United States senate,,' no natter who, was put under'the w searchlight that has been directed on Reed Smoot for the past few years would they prove us Invulnerable as . Smoot has? Mayor Thompson will probably "end In his list cf appointments to the ilty council next Monday evening, rom present Indications they will- be as follows: Chief of police, .George A. Sheets; chief of the lire department, j 'ames Devlne; or C. f. ail, city engineer, L. C. Kelsey; mperlntendent of waterworks, L. C. lines; humane officer, B. B. Mann; 'and and water commissioner, F. L. 'lathews; chairman of the boarJ of mbllc works, E. A. Wall. The mayor's appointments generally vlll be confirmed, but there Is somo loubt as to the acquiescence of the council In the removal of Chief of Po-Ico Po-Ico Lynch. It Is said that a number if councllmcn who call themselves 'Americans" will oppose any change n tho chief of police. Mr. Lynch was nvlted a few days ago to tender his eslgr.ation, but refused to do so. If it requires CO votes to deprive Senator Smoot of his seat In the sen-"to sen-"to It is moro than likely ho will remain re-main In that body for a number or years. United States Marshal Heywood has relinquished his claim on the American party for the appointment of chief of police of Salt Lake City, and Is directing his energies to se- 0 cure his reappointment as United States marshal. Bon Is a good fellow and has many friends, but it is not thought ho will be appointed to tho marshalshlp again. His term expires this month and It Is believed William Spry will be his successor. Councilman Preeco was beautifully ?at upon by tho president of tho city council and ho deserved all ho got and more too. Yet if Preeco had any brains moro than required by a peanut vender ho has tho opportunity or a llfo time to make things pretty warm in tho council. Mr. Sheets, It Is generally bolleved, will bo nominated by Mayor Thomn-son Thomn-son for chief of police or Salt Lake city. In tho case that Mr. Sheets Is appointed and confirmed It is expected thero will bo a complete reorganization reorganiza-tion of tho force and that no avowed ) Mormon or any person suspected of being a- Mormon will either bo retained re-tained or appointed to any position on the force. Nobody should have any complaint to make on that account, as it was well understood before the election that .In case the "Americans" -gj won no Mormon need apply. Major Dreeden, since ho has been attorney general of this state, has rendered to various state and county officials over COO legal opinions, only one of which has been reversed by the courts. He has made an enviable record, and attended to the duties of his office consclenciously and faithfully. faithful-ly. He took no part in the fight for against Senator Smoot and was not a witness in the case, the Tribune to the contrary notwithstanding. n |
