Show o THE COWARDLY TRIBUNE. The Tribune grows frantic in its efforts to disparago tho Gentiles who havo given testimony for tho defense In the Smoot case. Tho specials from Washington which appear daily in that paper one would havo thought are sufficiently mendacious, misleading mislead-ing and cold bloodedly fnlso to suit tho most depraved taste. However, those masterpieces In their lino, aro not sufficiently depraved for tho Tribune. Trib-une. To help out their deficiency tho paper has its local staff at work, but the efforts of tho latter aro puny compared com-pared to tho stuff that comes from tho master mind at Washington. Ono hattlo ground selected by tho Trlbuno is that which refers to tho status of thoso who woro In polygamy at tho timo tho manifesto prohibiting polygamy was issued. If as tho Tribune Trib-une says, there was no understanding: to tho effect that existing relations! should not bo disturbed, why was lt that tho late grand jury did not return re-turn Indictments against thoso few old polygamlsts who aro ononly confessedly con-fessedly and notoriously still living in polygamy. Thoro was either nn understanding un-derstanding that thoso old follows woro to bo left alono, or tho grand jury was romiss in its duty, very remiss, re-miss, indeed. Difficulty of obtaining ovidenco could not bo pleaded, because be-cause there was no difficulty. Tho polygamista themselves confessed their status and mndo no effort to screen themselves. If thoro was no such understanding In regard to tho old chaps, how is it that ox-County Attorney Westorvolt, a Gentile, a Mormon hater, elected to his office by tho grace of Senator Kearns, absolutely refused to entertain enter-tain complaints against thoso old polygamlsts poly-gamlsts oven when Importuned to do so by Charles Mostyn Owon, tho professional pro-fessional affidavit maker, and others? Thero was either an understanding or Westorvolt was as romiss in his duty as tho grand jury. If thero was no such understanding as claimed, how is It that previous county attorneys since statehood, all Gentiles, either absolutely refused to prosccuto the old boys or discouraged tno Idea to such an extent that only two or thrco prosecutions of that kind have occurred sinco statehood, and tliey under peculiar circumstances? ii ? was oltllor ai1 understanding or all thoso Gentile county nttornoys woro remiss In their duties. For nearly near-ly 10 years tho Gentiles havo acted as If thoro was an understanding such as s claimed. If thoro wasn't tho Gentiles, officers and citizens, havo been guilty of tho grossest latches. Tho entlro court machinery was in tho hands of the Gentiles. Why didn't they do something? If tho officers of tho law woro remiss in their duties, why didn't tho Gontilo residents make an outcry and compel their servants to do their duty? Instead of that not a word is heard. Officers ar eolected and re-elected, nobody does a thing until Sir Galahad Kearns comos along with his tin ormor and tin sword to punish tho Mormon church, uccnuso it refused to get into politics and send him back to tho Senato and also elect his hired man, Perry Heath, as assistant sonntor. How proud wo Gentiles aro of our self-constituted champcons in tho fight tho Trlbuno Is maklnc on tho Mormons! Tom Kearns, tho loader of a puro and holy causo for principle's prin-ciple's sako. It Is to laugh. And tho editor of tho Tribune, ox-Sonator Cannon, Can-non, Mormons nnd-Gcntlios both aro proud of him. A Gentile-man who has in public meetings and olsowhoro boasted that ho was a Mormonll through and through, from tho solo of his foot to tho crown of his head. In years gono by when tho Cannon's ruled tho church roost, Franklo received re-ceived moro favors from tho church and tho Mormon people than any other man. Ho sought all tho church influence influ-ence ho could get and moro too. llo lot nothing pass ovon to carrying n "recommend" from his bishop and a certificate to tho effect that he had paid Ills' tithing, and ho Is ns much of a Mormon today as ho cvor was. Yes, wo Gontilcs aro justly proud of him as a leader! Wo aro liko tho lectures lec-tures ho reads us in tho columns of tho Triibuno. Wo liko to bo told by him above all men of our duties ns Gentiles and tho responsibilities which rest upon us. Ho and Tom tho two great mentors. Tho Trlbuno makes a poor showing show-ing In its efforts lo disparago tho character and standing of tho mon who havo been examined for tho do-fenso do-fenso in tho Smoot caso. Character and standing aro points tho Tribune should havo avoided. It opens tho way for something to bo said about tho witnesses for tho other sldo. What about tho standing and credibility of Mr. Lunqulst, Charles Mostyn Owon, Argus M. Cannon, Jr., Rov. J. L. I.cillch and others? On tho testimony testi-mony of thoso kin dof mon tho enso of th cprosccutlon rests. It's a mighty poor foundation ovon if it went uncontradicted. |
