Show HOW SOME PEOPLE "BOOST." Editor Truth: Tho members of the Ministerial association and other mln Isters of tho city were In good faith and with tho very best motvos asked to say something in their dlscoursPi last Sunday which would help to advance ad-vance Salt Lake and its people. Inviting In-viting the Ministerial association to boost Salt Lake, howover, is like getting get-ting a hungry coyoto to protect a fnt hen. Tho Ministerial association for tho past decade has been slandering this state and city in a most damag-'ng damag-'ng way, distributing devil fish maps, scurrilous circulars, ex-Senatoi 'earns' Infamous anti-Utah speech vrltlng letters to tho eastern presf lefamlng Utah, seeking Interviews lr he daily papers so thoy can cast reproach re-proach on tho courts and tho men and women of this state, sending out lecturers and aiding others to belittle and Insult tho state from the pulpit and platform has been tho chief end and aim of tho Ministerial association. associa-tion. Last Sunday they had a chance to heap Insult upon injury, Dr. Paden on that day devoted most of his time to leading his congregation to believe that Salt Lake was a vast gambling hell. According to the newspaper reports re-ports he did not say ono word to boost Salt Lake, but palntod It as black as ho could. Tho Rev. McLaln Davis talked along tho same lines as Dr. Paden and closed his talk with a series of resolutions nil of which condemned con-demned Salt Lake. Dr. Taylor of the Central Christian church told a lurid talo and said: "Capital is a very dell cato thing itself and besides no right thinking man will move his family Into In-to a Sodom (Salt Lake) of Iniqult however great opportunities a city may offer in a commercial way." Dr. Young took pains to say Salt Lnko City had a blistering hell right In Its midst. He said nothing good about Salt Lake. Tho Rev. D. M. Helmlck of tho Illff church said: "The condition of Salt Lake City possibly Is not worse than it is in some other cities, but I question il you can find a cty in tho Unted State, of Its size that has more flagrant crime than is committed hero every night and day." The Rev. Frank Fay Eddlo of the Unitarian society also classified Salt Lake as one of tho worst cities. I behove be-hove it Is conceded by all that the immorality im-morality of any city is usually measured mea-sured by the number of licensed saloons sa-loons and drinking houses within Its borders, and many saloons are underground under-ground railroads to gambling dens, sporting houses and resorts of thieves and hold-ups. I have before mo the Wllkesbarre, Pa., Almanac for 1905 Tho first white settler came to Wllkesbarre in 17C2, and it has had time to become a thoroughly moral Gentile city. In 1905 Wllkesbarre had 55,000 population and 139 licenced saloons, sa-loons, or ono saloon for every 400 people. Salt Lake City has 80,000 people and 100 licenced saloons, or ono saloon for every 800 people. Walkesbarre has sixty-six Christian and four Jewish churches, and is considered con-sidered a good moral city. It stands at par morally with the cities of its class. Luzerne county, Pennsylvania, of which Wllkesbarre Is tho county seat, had 257,000 population in 1900 and over 1,000 saloons, or ono saloon for every 257 people. In 1900 Utah had 27C.O0O people and less than 27C saloons, or ono saloon for 1,000 people West Hazleton, Pa., a Gentile town, had in 1900 2,500 people nnd 2S licensed li-censed saloons, or one licensed saloon sa-loon for eighty-nine people. Brigham City, Utah, In 1900 had 2,900 people and two saloons, or one saloon for 1,450 people. Freoland, Pj a Gentile Gen-tile city, In 1900 had a population oi 5,254 and flfty-elght licensej saloons or ono saloon for every ninety people-Logan, people-Logan, Utah, in 1900 had 5,451 population popu-lation and four saloons, or one saloon for every 1,382 people. The Rev. Frank Fay Eddlo wants Salt Lako to bo a Gentile city. speak of Brigham City and Logan as ordinary Utah cities, and West Hnzle-ton Hnzle-ton and Freeland, Pa., to show tho limit to which saloons will go if thev aro unrestrained. Salt Lake City stands at tho very pinnacle of the c t es of tho United States for morality, mor-ality, schools, business opportunities and everything that goes to make a good and prosperous city. Our school buildings aro magnificent anil our teachers aro of tho very best. Most of them aro from tho eastern states Men nnd women who had pluck, determination, de-termination, ability and ambition snough to got out of tho old, cheap yages rut nnd come to Salt Lako, Irlnk in Its bracing air and enjoy its yonderful climate. Thoy have added tho good things of tho east to tho hustling, progressive west, and uniting unit-ing heart, hands and brain with our wlde-awako western teachers, they have made Salt Lako and Utah schools monuments of learning that any city, state or nation on the globo would bo proud of. Some of our best teachers aro from Luzerne county, Pennsylvania. Pennsylva-nia. When they go home on a vaca- tlon and hear the revolting falsehoods that aro told by tho Rev. T. C. Illff, Frank Cannon, Mrs. Schoff, tho devil fish literature of tho Ministerial association as-sociation and tho degrading influence of tho Salt Lako Trlbuno used to injure in-jure Utah, her schools aud her people, thoy truly are Indignant and ashamed, not of Utah as It Is,, but of tho people who aro slandering her. Salt Lake City and, In fact, tho great Salt Lako valley, affords groat opportunities for 'actorlcs and business enterprises. This is demonstrated by tho factories and smelters, tho car shops, tho now railroads, and tho amount of capital that Is being Invested here by tho railroad companies. Most of tho W preachers forgot to mention anything of that kind last Sunday. The Rev. Elmer I. Goshen preached one of tho best sermons over listened to on Salt Lako City last Sunday morning. Ho did not enlarge on or levoto his wholo time discussing tho evils of Salt Lake City. Ho spoko of them nnd pointed out a remedy. He told in a very eloquent way of our good schools and tho opportunl-'ies opportunl-'ies nnd the abundance of good material ma-terial at hand to mako Salt Lake a largo and prosperous city. Tho Rev. Peter Slmpkln also gave our city a jood boost In his sermon. Tho October and November numbers num-bers of tho Intermountaln Christian Advocate, the organ of tho Ministerial association, is certainly trying to knock Utah with Its old-time vigor. It devotes most of Its reading matter to knocking tho Utah schools nnl the people In Utah In general. Here Is a specimen. In tho October number It says: "A Gentile merchant who was superintendent of an undenominational undenomi-national -Sunday school numbering forty, closed It because It hurt his business among Mormon people." Here Is another falsehood In the samt number: "During the past eight months four Gentile fnmllles In Bear River valley havo sold their farms and left the state. The reason given for leaving Is the existing conditions, and that thoy could not remedy them and would not stand them longer." Wo havo hundreds of families in Boor River valley who came from eastern states. I wonder If they came to Utih because they could not stand the existing ex-isting conditions at home? I would advise the business men of thl3 city to go to the public library nn l read the September, October nnd November Novem-ber Issue3 of the Intermountaln Advocate Ad-vocate and see If thoy could Imagine that so much rot, falsehood and scan-lal scan-lal could be published in so small a scandalmonger. Also notice how much good Christian reading matter they can find in that publication. It ' could be written on the back of a postage stamp. Hera is an item in tho Wllkesbarre, Pa., Almanac concerning con-cerning two small suburban towns: "An accident showing tho rottenness rotten-ness existing in some of the township and municipalities of the county developed de-veloped during the year when an investigation in-vestigation into tho affairs of Duryea borough was conducted. Tho investigation investi-gation lasted for some weoks nnl it was found that there were made out in the course of several years orders to tho amount of about $20,000 for which no valid claim could bo found. Several arrests wero made. Evidence "ga nst not all of tho guilty parties ($ could bo secured. An ex-street commissioner com-missioner was in September convlcte 1 of conspiracy." "The court during tho year ousted the school board of Pittston township and appointed another board In its Place. Tho charge was fallura to properly conduct tho business of the board." If the above had happened in Utah tho Tribune would have come out with glaring head lines that tin Mormon Mor-mon hierarchy had swiped tho $20,00'! and that tho courts had ousted the PIttston township Mormon school 4f board because they held religious classes in tho school houses. Brother Wlshard would have written the same to tho Herald and Presbyter and tho Christian Advocate, nnd tho Ministerial Minis-terial association would have said amen. .Dr. Paden would have hurried hur-ried east and been interviewed along tho samo lino in tho Chicago Tribune, Pittsburg Times, St. Louis Chronicle, Washington Post, Philadelphia Press, and tho Now York Times, and tho preachers would havo fervently said, "Praise tho Lord." Dr. T. C. Illff would have proclaimed from both pul- B pit and platform that the Mormon I Danltes had stolen $20,00.0 In Duryea r a and that Mormon destroying angels had corrupted tho school board in PIttston township. At such good noW3 tho ministerial devil fish society of Salt Lake would havo jumped in their chairs, swung their hats and yelled "Hallelujah." Duncan J. McMillan would havo said that the Mormon3 of Duryea had purloined $20,000 to buy young girls for polygamous wives and that tho school board of PIttston township had been fired because they spent all their time getting married. Tho reverend knockers of Salt Lake would havo wired back, "Go it, Dun-key, Dun-key, and wo will stand by ycu." Mrs. Schoff would havo united all of the above in her lecture and Frankio and Tommio would havo tickled her under un-der tho chin and said, "Sister Schof-fy, Schof-fy, wo are with you, both soul and i body." Am I making tho above too strong or ridiculous? Let U3 eoo. At Brlgham City somebody told some on 3 . else and they in turn telephoned Mr. E. B. Crltchlow that some Mormons were having a row thero over a dance hall. Mr. Crltchlow enlarged on tho story and gave it to tho Smoot inquiry investigation at Washington, D. C. In less than a wook from that tlmo tho papera of tho United States proclaimed in largo head lines and the preachers from many pulplt3 tol.l of tho awful condition of Brlgham City, and thus the knockers keep hammering hammer-ing away. Yours truly, V. S. PEET. Salt Lake City, Dec. 12, 1905 n |
