Show Within tho past two weeks, two awful aw-ful calamities, one In Now York City anil ono In Brockton, Mass. havo occurred. oc-curred. The. loss of Hie m both was terrific. Men, women and Innocent children perished In sight of those who would havo roscuea them If they could and numerous Instances of death and suffering of an extremely pitiful naturo we're recorded by tho press. In both cases those who perished per-ished In a horriblo way wero nothing but tho victims, of tho cupidity of mankind. Tho Now York fire was in a crowded east side tenement, with no facilities for escape m tho hour of disaster, and tho shoo factory In Brockton appears to have been a fire trap, without any moans of O3capo for thoso employed In tlmo of danger. It Is Indeed strange that men will permit conditions to exist that dally and hourly threaten humanity with a sudden and a terrible end, but they do, and for no other reason than that It Is oxpenslvo to make needed chang-es. chang-es. In nearly ovory city In tho United States such conditions prevail. When an accident occurs a thrill of horror pervades tho community nnd tho owner own-er or owners aro execrated. But no one seems to tako warning. Salt Lake has soveral ilro traps, oxtensivo- ly populated and some aay this city Is to bo plunged In deep mourning because of tho selfishness of thoso who own them. It does not seem to do any good to direct attention to them either, for tho officials pay no attention to charges made and the owners express no sentiment, except that of Indignation toward a newspaper newspa-per having tho nerve to boldly proclaim pro-claim wrong conditions. As for tho peoplo themselves; why they will stand for almost anything beforo making a protest. |
