Show IKEARNS IS TO BLAMK. Cause for wonder is found in the Tribune of Thursday morning. That paper publishes tho information that tolls us tho honest prospector need not try to secure a claim on tho Uintah Uin-tah reservation until after the Raven and tho Florence Mining companies have selected all they want; that there are troops and Indian police at every entrance, and tho poor man, seeking to better his condition, has no business there. All this, however, a representative of either of the companies com-panies named can roam at will, for both aro under tho protection of tho government. Wo marvel that tno Tribune publishes pub-lishes such news, becauso it was partly part-ly through 'the untiring efforts" of its owner, when a senator, that this condition con-dition was made possib.e. Tho late postmaster general, Henry B. Payne, ho head of one of these companies, .vas an especial friend of tho owner if tho Tribune, and tho fact of such friendship no doubt kept tho latter rom doing his duty by his constituents, constitu-ents, tho people. Tho condition of affairs on tho reservation Is duo to tho inactivity and tho inability of Tom Kcarns, If nothing worse, because there Is little doubt ho stood in with Mio gang. Ho was tho man who pro-'essed pro-'essed to have all the Influence from 'his state; who claimed to bo able to Jo anything with tho administration no chose to do, yet when it camo to a Tuestion of protecting tho interests of tho public, ho neglected It. Ho was long on getting political friends appointed ap-pointed to office, but when tho welfare of tho public was at stako, ho was short; very short. Tho Trlbuno professes to believe that if President Roosevelt know tho facts matters would bo different. There Is an error there somowhero, for we believe tho Tribune has told its clients many times that Kcarns had Informed tho president of conditions. If the Tribune is right now, some one lied a while ago. All this talk on tho part of tho Trlbuno Is bluff. Tom Kearns Is interested in-terested In tho Raven and Florence companies, and does not want any prospectors on tho reservation until ho and his fellow grabbers have secured se-cured what they want. This publication publica-tion is too thin entirely. |
