Show o PEET WORRIES THE TRIBUNE. Editor Truth: When a newspaper will get in the position of a drowning man that it will grab at a straw it shows tho low ebb of usefulness at which it has arrived, ar-rived, and tho great difficulty It has to keep Its head abovo water with it's ediorials, its news and its subscription subscrip-tion list. Tho Salt Lake Trlbuno has reached that point. Tho Trlbuno is Imitating Charles Mostyn Owen, who hangs around a polygamist homo for weeks at a tlmo waiting for tho stork to appear, so he can ridicule and proclaim to tho world. Since last October I havo had upwards of two score of interviews In tho big eastern (papers on Bear Itivcr valley In particular par-ticular and Utah and Salt Lako City In general. These intorvlows havo in oach and every caso exposed a gang of traitors who for graft or rovengo havo told gross falsehoods to lnjuro this ptnte. Tho Tribune has watched thoso interviews very closely, .and on February 1st, it thought It saw a straw it could grab. In all tho interviews t havo had it thought It saw four and a half lines In a long Interview In tho Chicago Chroulclo of January 23 it I could misconstruo and make an editorial edi-torial about'. Tho Tribune has no uso for tho Manufacturers and Merchants' Mer-chants' association, or anything olso that is helping to upbuild Utah. It thought "it saw an op rtunlty to work politics or religion or something some-thing olso Into that association that would causo dlssentlon or a partisan fight that would destroy its useful ness. Tho heading of tho editorial abovo referred to is "Poet and Poly-P"my." Poly-P"my." That word polygamy has not only been tho keystone but tho alpha and omega of tho Trlbuno for tho past three years. Tho editor and owners of tho Trlbuno havo not only had polygamy for breakfast, dinner and supper, but thoy havo Indulged in it at night. They havo fed It to tholr readers six days in tho weok and then given them a doublo doso on Sundays. If It had not boon for polygamy tho Trlbuno would havo been as scarce ot reading matter ns ballet dancers aro of clothes and tho editorial page would havo looked Hko a bald head In tho front row. Thero has been ton times as much polygamy In tho Trlbuno Trlb-uno in tho past threo years as thero has been In Utah sinco July 24th, 1847. If it hadn't been for polygamy thero wouldn't bo any Frank Cannon to edit tho Trlbuno, and Brother WIshard, Dr. Padon, Rov. T. C. Iliff and Charley Owen would bo out of jobs. Tho .Tribune .Trib-une must think Its readors havo boon bereft of their reasoning powers to drink In tho slop that It Is dally feeding feed-ing them. Hero is a specimen in tho "Peot nnd Polygamy editorial." "If thero wero no polygamy In Utah, thoro would bo no story about polygamy to retard tho material progress of this commonwealth. If thero wero no political dictation by tho hierarchy thero would bo no story to that effect. If thoro wero no monopolistic commercialism com-mercialism by means of tltho funds, no report of such things would bo in circulation." In other words, If there had not been a great volcano west of Salt Lako belching firo, Bmoko and lava, illuminating tho whole inter-mountaln inter-mountaln country at night, filling tho whole Salt Lako valley with hot sulphurous sul-phurous fumes and terrorizing tho peoplo all tho newspapers of tho country would not havo given so glowing glow-ing accounts of it. This story was invented in-vented hero in 1897, and published pub-lished generally. Senator Smoot must havo had fr m two to five wives or tho Revs. John S. Lolllch, Duncan J. McMillian, Maria Weed, Dr. Sarah Jano Elliott, Theresa Stalhor and hundreds of others, and tho eastern newspapers would not have said so. Every child of a good Mormon must havo taken an oath of vengeance against all tho Gontlles of this unci un-ci Continued on pageO) |
