It Includes practically all retail dealers deal-ers of tho lnrgest city on tho Pacific coast and also has on Its roll many largo wholesale houses. This body was instituted originally to securo better municipal conditions. As its scope broadened it embraced a wider field of activity nnd Its deliberations cover many subjects of moment to business men. In addition to its pure-ly pure-ly mercantile members, mnny Individuals Individ-uals in professional classes havo joined Its membership. Somo tlmo ago, when It was proposed pro-posed in somo quarters to give tho f. making of all transportation rates to tho Interstnto Commerco commission, these united merchants, including hundreds of firms and corporations, found an emergency confronting them which It was at onco their interest and duty to tho Pacific coast to meet. In a printed pamphlet which has just been received, is tho text of declarations declara-tions mado by them. They adopted resolutions, tho text of two of which Is as follows: "Resolved, That tho Merchants' association as-sociation of San Francisco, while expressing ex-pressing tho highest respect for and confidence in, personally and collectively, collect-ively, tho members of tho Interstato Commerco commission, respectfully i urges that no legislation bo adopted ; whereby said commission would bo given tho nrbltrary right to make rates, as Inexpedient and not tb tho advantage of business interests of this community and that wo -recommend in lieu thereof that the commission be increased to seven members, and that, in view of tho vast commercial interests inter-ests involved and tho differences governing gov-erning transportation on tho Pacific coast and in tho Northwest, that tho two members thus added to tho commission com-mission should bo appointed, ono from tho Pacific coast and one from tho Northwest, so that all geographical sections of tho country would bo represented, rep-resented, nnd, bo it further "Resolved, That tho law under which tho commission Is at present operating 13, in our judgment, a prop- J or ono, if proper measures aro taken to expedite tho hearing of cases upon I which would contemplato tho establishment estab-lishment of a court of transportation whoso decision would bo final, except In cases whero tho constitutionality of tho decree was questioned." Tho association also resolved that "tho interests of this coast will best bo served by leaving tho authority to make rates whero It now is, In tho hands of tho carriers, who aro familiar famil-iar with tho exceptional conditions on tho Pacific coast and tho northwest, v I subject to roviow by tho Interstato Commerco commission upon complaint of tho shipper who feels that a given rate is wrong." |
