Show SWELL ELEGANT JONES. Quaint comedy, keen repartee, home-spun philosophy and unique observations permeate the lines of the rural comedy, "Swell Elegant Jones," in which Ezra Kendall will be seen at the Salt Lake theatre next Tuesday Tues-day and Wednesday evenings and Wednesday matinee. When Herbert Hall Winslow, author au-thor of the previous Kendall success, "The Vinegar Buyer," wrote "Swell Elegant Jones" he kept one aim foremost fore-most to provide a play of tire typical Kendall sort. He has succeeded in combining humorous character studies and an interesting, coherent story, which has its setting in a small Indiana In-diana village, Martinsville, near Indianapolis. In-dianapolis. "Swell Elegant Jones," being produced pro-duced under the direction .of Harry Askin & Co., affords a congenial part for Mr. Kenda.ll as he has been given scope in which to range from bits ot monologue to eight-cornered repartee. re-partee. He has maintained a rapid . fire delivery, hich marked many of his monologues and the action of the piece is strangely rapid for such a slow community. The staging of the company has been done by John' Staplcton, who was responsible for "The Heir to The Hoorah" and "The Virginian" productions when he was a member of the Kirke LaShcllc forces. Thcc two pieces were marked by their "atmosphere" and Mr. Staplcton has been as successful in wrapping rural-ism rural-ism around "Swell Elegant Jones" as Ire was in giving the air of the plains to "The Heir to the Hoorah" and "The Virginian." Mr. Staplcton -also has devoted attention to the proper delineation of the characters and the result has been that a sharp contrast has been preserved. |
