Show o MAY MAKE TYPES OF LIFE. Factories for the Production of Animals An-imals Among the Future Accomplishments. Animal factories may be an industry indus-try in future civilizations. Prof. Wll-helm Wll-helm Ostwald, of tho University of Leipzig, believes that by slow development devel-opment scienco may even create a typo of life as high as that of our domestic do-mestic cats and dogs. Of course at first man will be able to produce only a piece of protoplasm, something like -the water hydra or the resemblance of tho sea urchin Prof. Jacques Loeb, of tho University of California, has evolved; but it will bo instinct with real life and it will bo a step to tno new evolution. This evolution can only result in the creation of something some-thing tho equal of the higher animals, but what it will bo who can say? It seems to the professor that tho scientist who will be able to do this will bo ablo to determine tho physical form of his creation aft.r the development devel-opment has started and ho will havo created a new order -of life, for this being will multiply in its own- form Indefinitely, just tho samo as all our modern animals. "I am not a biologist; I am merely a chomlsr. I cannot say whether tnis . creation will bo crustacean, amphibian, mammalian, or whether biped, quadruped, quad-ruped, flsh, fowl, or reptile; I know that by inorganic processes organic being can bo produced, and futuro generations gen-erations may bo furnished with a living liv-ing object lesson In the doctrine of evolution. Who knows but a new order or-der of humanity may bo created? A living thing is nothing but a system of energy and life it is but a matter mat-ter of chemistry." |
