Show THE SUFFRAGISTS. At .1 meeting of the State Council of Women held Feb. 5, at the Woman's Wom-an's Exponent office, a letter was read from Senator Suthcil.iud relative rela-tive to the petition of that body, and a resolution forwarded by them, witli the following extract from the Congressional Con-gressional Record: "Mrs. Sutherland presented a petition of the Utah State Council of Women of Salt Lake City, Utah, praying for the adoption of an amendment to the constitution to prohibit pro-hibit the disfranchisement of citizens of the United States on account ot sex. which was referred to the select se-lect committee of women's suffrage." The trend of the suffrage movement move-ment in the United States is shown by President Roosevelt's reception of its committe at the White House. President Roosevelt received a committee representing the National American Woman's Suffrage association associa-tion at the White House, by invitation, invita-tion, a few days ago. The committee commit-tee comprised Miss Kate M. Gordon of New Orleans, corresponding sec-rcctary sec-rcctary of the National Woman's Suffrage association; Mrs. Harritt Taylor Upton of Warren, O., treasurer treas-urer of the association; Mrs. Kather-ine Kather-ine Reed Ballcntinc, the daughter ot the late Thomas B. Reed, and Mis. Henry Dixon Bums, wife of the distinguished dis-tinguished Louisiana surgeon. The president reiterated his personal belief be-lief in woman's suffrage, promised to give the matter further consideration, and advised as the "next step" for suffragists, the securing of another full suffrage state. To this suggef- ' tion Miss Gordon replied: "Mr. President, we won our fifth suffrage state in Oregon last year, but the victory was stolen from us by the great corporations and the organized liquor interests." Communications from other states show that the women wo-men citizens of the United States are alive to their interests and arc up and doing with their might. o |
