Show TWENTY YEARS AGO THIS WEEK SCRAPS FROM OUR OLD FILES OF 1902 the officers of the young ladies mutual improvement association of this city entertained sister naomi gillett last tuesday afternoon at a farewell social at the home of mrs emma J atkin mrs gillett is the stake dent of the young ladles ladies association and is planning to leave shortly for idaho where she will take up her future residence for some time professor richard lyman of the utah state Niver university sity and principal ill i of the grants ville schools were the speakers at the ward meeting last sunday the object of the remarks of prof lyman was to interest en terest the people in favor of establishing a high school in this city at the district school meeting held last monday evening in this city a school tax of 8 mills milla was proposed to be levied on the district property editors note 1922 you would think from the 1 fuss that is being kicked up at present about the exorbitant expense of schools that the present levy for schools would be much higher but us as a matter of fact just 63 mills was levied as a county school tax last year the state school tax however was 47 mills 21 mills of this tax was voted upon themselves by the taxpayers last general election when they passed the soc called a lied second amendment which authorized the state to give so much per capita for the education of each school child in utah our school district is much poorer through the passing of this thia amendment with the addition of the high school and the schools the transportation money jonew vaid oaid to students living away from tho the high school and all in all a longer term of school with a present rating of higher qualified teachers we feel assured that the running of our school system is in the hands of most conservative and progressive business minds give it a few minutes thought and do you not feel the same about it we will make the statement without much fear of contradiction that the average time spent pent in school by children between the ages of 6 and 18 school age has doubled within the last 20 years in our community A most pleasing condition today a high school education is a common thing among our young peo people ale twenty years ago it was a rarity the contract for the work on the leamington leavington Lea cutoff cut off has been awarded and by june 2000 men will be employed on the new line that is to be finished by the first of january next max alder the man that was found frozen to death last friday morning near tho the terminus was buried last monday in this city no word has been heard from any of his friends and no one knows where he came from the funeral services were held at tb the residence of H B haynel fl aynes mayor louis strasburg elder peter nelson and 11 B haynes were the speakers A good crowd was in attendance at the funeral although the unfortunate man was wa a total stranger here work on the county jail is expected to begin some time aime next week A G shields Sli ields the contractor for the tooele thoele city sheep shear ers era association is now ready to contract for the El shearing learing of sheep at the cooee tooele shearing corral ut at sv and a half cents per head |
