Show central school jennie reporter this year brought forth the usual problems for each and in addition several exceptional problems which are arc trying to the utmost the ingenuity of the teacher specifically concerned one of these special problems la Is the second grade over which mrs rutledge is teacher the pupils of this room vary in attainment tain ment from the kindergarten to the second grade yet with but few exceptions none can be classified with any regular grade thirteen of these pupils were unable to read the most simple of sentences after three weeks of the usual methods no progress had been made so a special plan was devised and now after four weeks trial the children are prepared to read two or three simple stories the pupils of mrs lunds bunds room are now studying the stories of the pilgrims these thesa stories tell of their wanderings until they reached america the ho room is being decorated with drawings and cuttings which illustrate the dress manners and customs of themselves and the people with whom they came in contact the reading material and the language age work also la Is correlated with this major subject the preparation for and the celebration of the first thanksgiving day in america wilt will close the tha work planned for november special programs in each of the rooms reminded the pupils of the sacrifice of civilization in the late war and signaled the day which marked its close following Is tho the report asked of 11 the teachers of the first grade we have been teaching half day sessions long enough to test the plan and find that we are allo able to instruct the pupils in smaller groups and thus give them more individual help this small group plan is urged by miss peterson Pet eison our state primary supervisor and other prominent primary educators although the children are arc not in school as long lond as they would be with the old plan they are progressing more rapidly than the children of the first grades did last year and other years this shows definitely defina tely the value of direct supervision in the formation of correct study habits and brings out the fact that right practice makes perfect |
