Show AN interesting LETTER Grants grantsville ville utah uta inept I sept 11 1917 DEAR EDITOR OF transcript alter after an absence of 0 nearly four our weeks mrs clark and myself returned to our home we let left grantsville Grants ville on the of august and went to mr arthur naylors taylors Nay lors in bountiful where we spent the getting ready pir for a trip to chesterfield idaho the mr naylor and family mrs clark and myself left bountiful in mr naylors taylors Nay lors chandler car and rolled out for the north we traveled as far as garland in the bear river valley the nat hrit day from ogden to garland we passed a great many fields of beets one would judge from the many patches of beets that the leet beet sugar industry was the chief industry the beets look fine but the grain is backward and light on the morning mornin ft of the we ref re fumed our journey and was soon over into the malad valley in trav traveling ling up the valley I 1 noticed the great change in a the settlement of the valley in fifty years fifty years ago the first o of last march I 1 traveled through this 0 valley on horse back on my way to salt lake city where I 1 arrived on the of march 1867 we traveled up the valley and when within 12 miles of malad city we crossed the state line and entered the state of idaho we stopped slopped a while for lunch and then resumed our journey up a tributary of the malad river made camp for dinner we finally reached the summit or divide between malad and marsh valleys here again I 1 noticed the wonderful change that the hardy pioneers has hai wrought in this valley in fifty years instead of a vast ast wilderness covered with sage brush wild meadows and lava rock with nothing to break the rdo monotony of 0 the scene but the howl 40 ing wolf and the dusky savage now athe the valley 11 i dotted with farmhouses farm houses and herds of cattle and horses are roaming over the hills our next stop was at the tava lava hot sp springs slings ings which is a great bathing resort for or the people in this region the bathing pool is feet the springs that feeds the pool c cames mes out from under a huge bed of lava rock from there we followed up the Port enouf river until we entered the Squaw Hat flat valley and soon arrived at the little railroad town of f bancroft bancroft is situated at the south end of the valley Chesterfield and at the north end bancroft is a central point for many of the sheep owners who ship irom from that point from bancroft we traveled north norih eight miles to mr naylors taylors Nay lors ranch which consists of acres nearly all ol of which is tillable land in this valley the grain crop is very light which is on account of th the late spring most of the grain was put in the last of may or the first of june and should they have early frosts many fields of grain will be ruined after resting two dayt days at the ranch we started for or the sheep camps over on the cazabon range we stopped at soda springs one day and two nights and enjoyed the rest very much here we had the chance of quenching our thirst several times with genuine soda water to my mv taste Is much better and I 1 believe healthier than the so called soda water that one gets at the soda fountains we took a over the mound where the water bubbles up there are a number of springs some not larger than the top of a common glass bumb ber soda springs is a pleasant summer resort but I 1 was told that the winters are arc very severe soda springs is situated on bear river and is a great resort for sheep men and a griat great shipping point to the eastern markets from soda springs we journeyed into grays lake valley which I 1 suggested to the company should be called ed meadow valley for it is 13 really a city of hay stacks it reminded me ol of the great platte valley in nebraska we left out our car on the cast side of the valley and took the old way of conveyance the wagon and ascended to an clevi elevation tion of feet and on to the head waters of elk and tincup creeks and near the great mountain carabin Ca Cai rabon abon who lifts his head feet above sea level we made camp in a beautiful little valley surrounded by mountains covered with pine and quaking asp trees we spent one day fishing and in the evening feasted on trout this is decidedly the best summer range for cattle and sheep that I 1 have ever seen mr naylor has three herds of sheep io in this range and another some 40 miles distant after a four our days stay we returned to our car and came back by way of henry and soda sida springs on the we arrived at naylors taylors Nay lors ranch and on the ath of september we turned our course homeward arriving at bountiful at 9 having traveled miles of actual traveling in eight hours we averaged over twenty three miles an hour respectfully J R RCLARK CLARK |
