M. Ten Eyck, of the Fort Hays branch experiment station, spoke on the subject of Drought-Resistan- t In the course of his Crops. remarks he said: Drought resistant crops, or crops farmwhich are adapted to ing, may be divided into three quite distinct groups, as follows: 1. crops, which grow rapidly and ripen before the avallab'e soil moisture is used up, or before the hot, dry weather begins; such as winter wheat and early spring grains. 2. Crops which root deeply and gather their moisture supply from a large volume of soil, such as alfalfa and certain grasses. vigorous-growin3. Hardy, crops, which are able to cease growth when the soil becomes too dry or conditions become too unfavorable, and remain In a dormant state until the rain comes, when they make quick use of the favorable conditions, growing rapidly, simply reaching maturity a little later than would have been the case If they had been subject to no unfavorable conditions during the period of growth. These last are true drougf crops, such as kafir corn, sorghum, buffalo grass and other native grasses of the western plains. The crops which belong to the class last named, as a rule, do not root deeply, but the plants develop an of abundant and extensive growth roots in the surface soil, which enables them to take advantage of light rains and to quickly absorb a large part of the Water which enters the soil, thus securing a greater supply of water under certain conditions and allowing less waste by surface evaporation than occurs with a deeper-rootincrop or with crops which make a less growth of fibrous roots in the surface aoil. It appears also that certain of these crops actually require less wa ter to produce growth than some other crops which are not considered especially drought-resistanAside from the character which luch crops possess of taking advantage of the conditions under which they grow, these drought-resistan- t crops are different In some ways from ordinary crops In the quality named above, in that they are able to stop growing during unfavorable weather and with unfavorable soil conditions, renewing their growth again when conditions become better. This character in a plant is not well understood. It seems to be a characteristic which has been bred into the plant by continual exposure to the conditions under which it is able to grow. We find that most of the crops adapted for growing on the western plains have been imported from foreign countries which have a semi-ariclimate similar to the climate of the western plains. Thtv.e crops have been bred and grown for centuries, perhaps, in the countries from which they have been brought, and the character of being drought-resistan- t has become a quality of the plant, the same as the character of 'being hardy in a cold climate has become the nature of certain varieties of fruit and o' many cropa. Without doubt, therefore, certain crops are more drought-resistan- t than farmothers, but successful ing depends largely upon the character of the soil, the preparation- of the seedbed and the culture which the crop receives. The only soils which may be made to produce crops without irrigation in the semi-ariregions are soils which have great moistureholding capacity. It takes water to produce drought-resistan- t crops as well as to produce crops grown under ordinary circumstances, and a thin soil underlaid by a gravelly or coarse, sandy subsoil will produce, if at all, only when water is supplied in sufficient quantity during the period of crop growth, while soil which retains moisture well may produce crops even without much rainfall during the growing season. Prof. H. B. Linfield of the Montana experiment station says on this subject: "I have seen a paying crop grown without irrigation on land ranging from a claj ey loam to almost sandy, when the subsoil was not porous. It is a scientific system providing methods of conserving moisture to be used when plants require the same. The system Is not complex is In fact simple to those who are willing to learn but the rules laid down for the guidince of those undertaking to raise crops when the precipitation is not too plenty, must be followed, the work done properly and intelligence used, because no hard and fast rule can be made to apply to all conditions. Dry farming has been carried on in California for over forty years and other western states for a great many years. It is a long way from being a new proposition in the states west of the Rockies. One of the most important things in connection with it. Is to understand why we do certain kinds of work why we are taking big chances of getting a crop when we scratch our soil three or four inches deep call it plowing and then in a half hearted way run our harrows over our plowed ground, possibly half as much as we ought to have done. A great many people have never considered how soils will get packed through wild animals, also domestic stock roaming over it for ages. The natural result cannot fall to make such land all but impervious to moisture. We know that if we open up soil fairly such soil will absorb rain deep and snow when It melts. We know that by cultivation after heavy rains, when our land is sufficiently dry for us to take a team and harrow on it, we will make a surface mulch (which should not be too fine) which will help us conserve or hold that moisture in the soil. When a man places $1,000 in a bank and draws $500 out. he knows that he has $500 left. So it Is wiih the dry farmer if he prepares his land as he should, he can store up moisture and if he crops it and his crop takes only part of the moisture conserved, he still has some for the next crop provided he takes the proper methods of holding such moisture in the soil. Too many new settlers do not have enough means to work wiih; lack of teams and the ecessary machinery, handicap them seriously that it is all but Impos-sifcfor them to do their work as It shhuld be done, result Is too often meager crops If not failure. Farming Is a sLiece and requires for success, the befetup man has in him; hit or miss proposltions'must from now on give The dry way to improved methods. farmer must study his soils and conditions. He must learn to plow deeply thereby making his soil capable of reand ceiving and holding moisture, must cultivate at the right time. Learn that weeds rob him by taking moisture and fertility out of his land which belong to his crop learn that the best seed he can possibly get or raise Is the cheapest and safest to sow that small quantities of seed to sow, rather than excessive amounts Is absolutely necessary to his success. That a press wheel drill should be used to sow with saving seed and putting it where It belongs Into the soil at the proper depth. One other matter 1 would suggest to those who are starting to farm new land in the arid and semi-aristates is as soon as they can afford it, that most of these soils are deficient In vegetable matter, or what is called humus and that I believe it will pay big to put some In our soils now. I rotation of thoroughly recommend crops and we ought to in onr rotation work, sow a crop of either fail rye or some leguminous crop and plow them under, recollecting that after plowing we must thoroughly pack the soil tc aid in he decomposition of what we have plowed under. d 170 Por 8outhem California, Goldfield and Tonopah, leave Salt Lake City 5.00 p. m. and 11.50 p. m. daily.
