distance on foot to study the natives london charlotte mansfield a well known english author of the a smart mart set has just juit started from england to embark on art one ot of the me most st adventurous journeys ever undertaken by a woman she proposes to go frum from cape town south africa to cairo egypt a distance of nilles miles accompanied com compa panted nied only by native gu guides ldes part of the way lies through pra practically cally unexplored country midway in the squib south african jungle she hopes to meet president roosevelt though the meeting place is pot not yet determined upon miss alias mansfield thinks it will be son somewhere where near nal al robt north of lake tanganyika the natives of 0 this district are known to be treacherous ind and hostile arid and as miss alias mansfield will be the only white aomar among them the situation Is likely to prove highly dangerous the adventurous woman spent all her spare time lately in ili learning how bow to use firearms so that should sho she le be attacked in making one of the most perilous trips on record she will be able to give a good account of herself er what will carry miss mansfield through successfully la is perhaps tho the dar daring alig character of her project though not the first journey made by a white woman through this portion of africa it Is the first time one of tier her sex has attempted to go through on oil the lines laid down by miss mansfield most others who have made the trip have done so from necessity go ing from ono one part of the district to another in order to reach some permanent residence in the country and having as little to do with the natives as possible with miss alias mansfield however it is different she intends to try to affiliate with the natives to learn their habits of thought Q and to study their customs she Is it a great believer in the psychology of at the native races and as she la Is som somewhat what 21 of a 1 seer ir herself will strive to get en rapport with tho the aborigines in a way hitherto undreamed of by others 1 I 1 have learned to shoot she said when seen een at her beautiful flat in london just before her departure not because I 1 take any pleasure whatever in killing things but chiefly to be able to protect myself against the wild beasts of the country and to provide food for our party as we go along I 1 have become quite an expert with the pistol shotgun and rifle and think there will be no difficulty lit in bagging all the game required As to the natives I 1 fear no trouble from that source at all in fact already I 1 have received letters from unknown white friends in various parts parta of the country who have bave promised to help me on an my way through by explaining to the various chiefs that my visit Is not one of exploitation 1 I shall go from cape town to the vicinity of the victoria falls by railroad b bit bil it this Is a very small portion of at the journey it is in fact only on leaving tue tile railway for good that the real journey begins 1 I will have to walk fully miles halt half ot of which Is through practically unexplored country I 1 have said that I 1 intond intend to walk through this district but that of course will not be la fa its literal sense beuse possible as aa a large portion odthe of the journey will have jo p be mado made by water for instance after leaving the neighborhood of the river lit in rhodesia we shell shall have faveto to go gd by boat down lake tan gan ylI from the end of that lake meshall we shall gradually our way on fin foot until well WE como come to the low lower er end the nile river ilver 1 I am anxious to make excursions into the mining districts in this part of the country it la Is reported that there are a number of ancient copper mines worked entirely by natives and nd that those these natives are extremely wild I 1 would like to see these mines though I 1 have been warned that such a journey Is quite unprecedented and that a visit from a white person would riot not bo be at nil all welcome this adds ot of course all tho the more to the zest of 0 the trip hut dut whether I 1 am able or not to visit these mines will bo be a it matter iatter for fer decision when nearing the a 10 I 1 t 1 I J ant am not going wholly alone continued alias mansfield though I 1 shall be ba tile the only white woman to make tile the trip I 1 shall be accompanied by a native guide who will have charge of my band of 0 carriers the only serious trouble which I 1 am told I 1 shall have to guard against are arc tho the mosquitoes from the bites of which one gets fever we shall pro vide ourselves with all the latest scion precautions against thes cheso pests As I 1 go through the he country I 1 shall write descriptions and take photographs f am providing with rt a special photographic which will withstand all climatic conditions no one has been through this country with proper photographic appliances ani and I 1 think the pictures I 1 Itro procure cure will bo be a revelation to the outside world alter after we have reached the upper nile our difficulties will be practically over as there are plenty of boats to take us to khartoum |
