the limelight for several years un til salt air opened and the waters of the lake continued to recede rhen then it with inith the other smaller beach resorts were forced to close there are not many people who remember lake point or gar field held beaches but they who do tell with pride and a sparkle in their eyes there were two other ing attractions at lake point and garfield beaches worth recalling here the first steamboat launched on the waters of great salt lake was first known as the city of corrine built in 1869 the history of this boat is most interesting time will not permit a lengthy story but aft er the purpose for which the boat had been built had been filled that of hauling of ore and passengers and after sand bars appeared on the lake this colorful boat made pleasure trips from black rock beach out on the lake early set sel tiers used to tell of often seeing the boat ablaze with lights and hear music issuing from aboard ac ross the waves A few years later about the time garfield beach was in it glory the old city of corrine was re christen ed the general garfield and was s anchored to the pier at old garfield beach and it became a popular restaurant and hotel the huge an chor for this boat was made by two pioneer tooele thoele county black smiths philip delamare and sam uel lee they are the fathers of daughters alice D gowans and lottie lottle L shields who this marker during the late 1880 s the boat caught fire and burned at its moor ings and the proud city of corrine was no more another bit of interesting history concerns another boat that navi gated the waters of great salt lake the kate conner owned by gen patrick conner and was used as an excursion boat its run being from lake point beach to stansbury island As many as passengers were often on board the anchor for this boat was also made by philip delamare it weighed ibs lbs and was made from the abels of the old santa fe wagons wheels that brought to utah the first sugar machinery philip delamare being one of the main figures in this important con trib ution to the sugar industry of utah after the garfield smelter began operations the kate conner was used to haul ore and on one of these taps trips sank the remains could be seen for years after mired in the sand of the bank near the smelter we lae are proud to mention these tooele thoele county men and the part they played in this interesting his tory of utah these facts were taken from the auto biography of thomas dela mare son of philip delamare who rel remembered taking trips on these boats in closing let us pay brief tribute to those enterprising builders who built these famous pleasure resorts we must keep in mind all ma used had to be hauled some distance not by truck or tram train but by wagons and teams there were no modern machinery no power saws no steam shovels no pile drivers it took muscle and brawn and above all ambition and cour age and a firm belief in the future to undertake the build ng of such enterprises regardless Beg ardless of whatever may transi re in the future no genera tion will see a more progressive group of builders than those of early days for no man will ever face again such conditions as those that faced our pioneer builders yes little is left tonight but fond memories of these pioneer pleasure resorts night after night the sun sinks beyond the beautiful waters of great salt lake leaving these old salt encrusted posts to toj time ime and memory fi |
