Show eiton elton tunnel engineering masterpiece to be auctioned off next monday the national tunnel and mines company will sell at auction their eiton elton tunnel all equipment and b buildings on both ends publicly next monday october 4 at the to oele county court house the mul ti million dollar operation has been closed down except for a crew of 12 men since sept 15 1947 the mine was officially closed at that time after a month of bringing 0 ut various equipment in the tunnel begun in 1937 to connect with the bingham tunnel the eiton elton tunnel was completed in june 19 41 but the first ore was not ex traded until january of 1942 prior to that time mining operations at the highland boy mine and the apex mine on the bingham side had been curtailed because odthe great depth of these two shafts which necessitated pumping the water and hauling the ore a great distance to the surface it was believed that by drilling the tunnel in and coming into these shafts near their bottom levels the water could be drained from them and the ore hauled directly out on a track through the tooele thoele en trance and taken to the smelter here water benefits farmers after the tunnel reached its ob ejective operations at highland boy and apex were again exten sive and much ore was taken from them as well as other lodes struck within the tunnel in addition a stream of water measured at 2500 2 gallons a minute was made avail able to farmers of lincoln and tooele thoele during the period of operation of the mine approximately tons of ore was taken out daily over a period of 5 years and 7 months and at its peak the tun nel employed men william T bill warren was superintend ent and when he left frank baby assistant superintendent was in charge mr baby left in july of this year and master mechanic C C caldart has been head of the operations erat ions at the tunnel since then during the heavy activity at the eiton elton tunnel several homes were built by the company in tooele thoele and sold to employees of the tun nel these homes are in the northeast section of town in what Is known at the eiton elton addition six million dollar investment it is the belief that the company hat that acquires the tunnel will conduct exploration operations as soon as it during the war the government paid subsidies on lead and copper which made the tun nel pay but since the subsidies have stopped the national tunnel and mines fouda that operation of the tunnel was no longer a paying proposition with the high price of labor and materials exploration was not believed wise by the company so the tunnel was closed down last year and has re bained that way since the property and tunnel and equipment advertised Is worth up wards of 6 million at last computations and will be sold at auction to the highest bidder |
