Show k 11 e n P 0 ir t 0 P 11 CS by A T roberts chronicle sports editor evv amk ite runs roughshod Rough shed over morgan for 30 7 will win EVERYONE PLAYS he d of buffaloes stampeded the r way to a 30 7 vie tory over the morgan trojans last friday night in the r last practice game before they start the r quest for the jordan d vision crown and if the game they played in the heart of weber canyon is any md ind ca tion of the kind of football coach johnny s charges are gong go ng to put forth for the balance of the season the jordan league teams are go ng to be in for some mighty rough afternoons A NEW TEAM it was a far different team un der the lights at morgan in fact it almost looked like a new team from the one that lost by one point to park city a week before the entire squad and every man that had a suit on saw action played like a demon and every thing they tried worked on the ground through the air around the ends through the middle and down the throats of the morgan trojans stampeded this raging rag ng herd and they travelled for yards on the sod and 91 yards through the air they piled up 12 first downs and morgan champion of region 2 for the past two years couldn coulden t register a single first down of the fourth ter and then they racked up but four all of them against second and third stringers tooele thoele scored in the first three minutes of play when larry stev ensen intercepted a morgan pass and ran 66 yards to a touchdown the extra point try was no good tooele thoele scored again when chuck gillespie returned a morgan punt to his own 27 yard line per fill romped through left tackled for 37 yards larry stevenson bulled his way for 5 more yards and then he passed to hamilton for 24 yards and a first down on the morgan 7 yard marker gillespie went a round the right end and took the pigskin into the tall grass carry ing four trojans with him the try for the point was no good the third TD came when mor gan failed to gain kicked to too ele and the buffs ran it over in 7 plays intercepted a morgan pass and returned it to morgan morgans s 21 in 6 more plays they made the score 24 0 again the kick was no good THIRD QUARTER SCORELESS the third quarter was scoreless but early in the fourth the buffs stampeded to their fifth touch down score 30 0 five tries for extra points and five misses at this point poured in the reserves and for the f time morgan got in the ball game starting from their own 31 and helped along by a 15 yard penalty on tooele thoele fullback boss ross giles per carried the ball though the middle of the I 1 ne until the ball was on the 11 yard line then the tooele thoele defense sucked III expecting I 1 mothe another line smash by giles he ile crossed them up and lateral led to me mikesell s 1 I who crossed the I 1 ne standing up giles went through the 1 ne aga n for the extra point the cooee tooele reserves were on their way to still another TD with dan griffith and gordon fitzwater leading the way when the timers gun put an end to the game EVERYBODY LOOKED GOOD every man on the purple and white played like cha rimps jim bevan and dan griffith called the plays smoothly mixing them up in fine style giving the entire back field a chance to carry the ball the buff forward wall opened up holes for the ball earners carriers chuck gillespie was especially hard to bring down and not once in the entire game did a lone trojan bring him down it alaways took 3 or 4 chubby who has tak en over timmer s half back spot now that timmer has been hurt averaged 9 9 every time he laid his hands on the ball larry stevenson lived up to his rooted s fondest dreams he hit the line like a run away locomotive picking up yardage every time he carried the t he ball ends bones hamilton and loren dunn were terrific bones gave the trojans a couple of lessons in the art of catching a pigskin as he pulled in four passes good for 52 yards rupp and swan at tackles were opening up the holes for the back and hackl ng with bone crush ing socks that rocked the trojans r down to their heels guards dee bo bowman stud and ralph poulson looking like midgets along side swan and rupp hit their opponents with every bit as much roo as the big boys st jeor and shields at center play ed a bang up game and among the reserves doug baum and gord cord on gave notice that they don t I 1 ke the bench and will see plenty of action before the season closes the only weak spot in the tooele thoele game was in the kicking depart ment five times they attempted to convert by place kicks and five times imes they misad in a close con test this could mean the difference between a victory and a defeat so far in two games tooele thoele has scored 7 and have yet to add a single extra point score by quarters tooele thoele 12 12 0 6 30 morgan 0 0 7 7 |
