Show receive citation for their son mr and mrs james R williams recently received the silver star which was presented posthumously to their son jay with the follow ing citation the prescient pres dent of the united states takes pride in presenting the SILVER STAR MEDAL posthumous ly to PRIVATE FIRST CLASS JAMES J WILLIAMS UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS for ser vice set forth in the following cita tion for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a leader of a machine gun squad in a platoon of company H third battalion twenty sixth marines fifth marine division in action against enemy japanese forces on iwo jima volcano islands 15 march 1945 with h s platoon pin ned down by enemy machine gun fire private first class williams volunteering to evacuate a severe ly wounded marine led three oth er men across a thirty yard section of terrain exposed to a withering 1 cross fire of hostile maaine machine guns carrying a stretcher he succeed ed in reaching the wounded man and kneeling in an exposed tion entirely guiding the litter bearers back through the fire lines private first class Wil williams ilams al though struck down by japanese fire just before the completion of his mission enabled his comrades to bring the wounded man to safe ty where he was treated by a corps man his aggressive and courage ous conduct served as an inspire tion to his men and was in keep ing with the highest trad eions of the united states naval service he gallantly gave his life for his country for the president signed by james forestal secre tary of the navy A great tribute to a gallant sold ler ier it is too bad that he couldn t receive it himself mr and mrs jame mccardell left tuesday morning for california where they will visit with their sons they also intend to visit dr and mrs joseph peck while there |
