Show boneer mother of antoville fonts 6 ants ville Is interviewed Intel viewed 4 la e e A XI P ft gracean studio mrs annie H green utah pio neer and a resident of grants ville for many years shows her granddaughter miss marzene green tooele thoele county centennial queen one of the two lovely pit chers both over years old now that were brought to utah mrs annie H green in the other day I 1 met a most in te terest resting mg little lady she was short her hair was white but she had a ready smile and a lot of energy I 1 was intrigued by this young look ing pioneer and decided to find out a little about her life here is what she told me I 1 was born at st helaers on the island of jersey on october 3 1866 my father fathers s name was charles herman horman jr and my mother was margaret delahaye powell I 1 was the eighth child of a family of ten all brothers except one sister two brothers were buried on the island of jersey one after we ar rived in utah of 01 this large family I 1 am the only living member I 1 was born a member of the lat ter day saints church because maj parents had been converted years before when I 1 was almost two the church authorities told my father that it was time for him to take his family to america my fam ly packed up what belongings they could take and we started on the long journey to our new home we left liverpool england on june 21 1868 in the company of british swiss and german saints we were on the ocean six weeks and my mother often told me of the hardtack bread and salt pork which they had to eat she told me that many of the saints died but that she was always glad that our family all arrived safely I 1 cant can t remember my f train ride but it must haie been quite a trip after v e reached benton it was reported to us that the freight train carrying our clothes had wrecked and it would be quite sometime before we could go on we were forced to wear the same clothes for 3 weeks and when our baggage d d reach us one trunk in 1868 by mrs greens mother mrs margaret herman horman the pit chers came from the island of jersey one slightly larger than the other and are a rich blue in color decorated with flowers and gold around the top when the family was on their way crossing the plains their wagon overturn was lost my family had evereth ng ready and so we started the long over land trip to utah we were in john gillespie s ox train of 54 wagons when we got to utah my grand mother and sister were very sick I 1 began to wonder why and so my mother told me what had happened As we were crossing a wash one day the wagon my grandmother sister and I 1 were in tipped over my sister held the weight off of me so that I 1 was not injured but grandma and my sister were pain fully injured I 1 still have one of the smashed trunks in my posses sion we moved to tooele thoele where my father bought land and built us a rude log hut for shelter when I 1 was 17 1 I met edward B green and after 3 years of earnest courting on his part he finally persuaded me to marry him you know if he were still I 1 ving we could celebrate our wedding anniversary this fall but he died in the winter inter of 1943 our nine children were born in vinous various c ties throughout the coun ty of those nine only six are liv ing and they are boys it just goes to prove that boys are the hardiest creatures after all I 1 lost my two daughters just after they had grown to womanhood we lived in various places a round the county and finally set tied in this home in grants ville a bout 45 or 50 years ago we all had the sicknesses and diseases known at the time but somehow we managed to survive I 1 guess we were just too mean for the good people in heaven yes life has been hard but it has been good too and I 1 can say I 1 have really enjoyed it ed ond and their belongings were scattered about at that time the larger pitcher was cracked sligh ly but both pitchers are still in use and treasured by the family the picture in the background is of mrs green greens s mother mrs hor man |
