' " 1 i ;? by Kent Allen The Fall season is upon us and a new year of activities and competition has already started at the high school. We have re-ported on this before, but just to remind you, the region that the high school is affiliated with is Region 4 in Class 5A. The UH-SA- A make adjustments to the various regions and members within those regions every three years and this is the first year of this current change. The schools the Vikings will be competing with are: American Fork, Lehi, Lone Peak, Westlake, Herriman and Riverton High Schools. Nate Johnson, the Athletic Director at Pleasant Grove High School said, "We are still in a very tough league. We are go-ing to have to win every game, but we could be more competi-tive in this region with its new makeup." He also explained that there were some new coaches and new assignments for this 2013-201- 4 school year. Russ Mayo, who until re-cently was coaching the P.G. High School Cross Country team, was asked to be the head coach of the Girls Tennis Team. Russ coached the boys and girls tennis teams in the 2003-200- 4 school year and continued to coach the girls team until 2008 when he stepped down to coach the cross country team. After a four year break from the girl's tennis team, he was asked to return as head coach and is ex-cited to be back. The Girl's Tennis Team has been doing quite well. They have played everyone in the re-gion at least once and Herriman High School twice and pulled out victories both times. They have a winloss record of four wins and three losses. The Viking's new Girls Soccer Coach Lee Tortorelli played soccer at University High in Washington. He played hockey, indoor soccer and sla-lom, and freestyle skied com-petitively. He earned degrees from Spokane Falls Community Col-lege, Northwest College, Uni-versity of Montana and Utah Valley University. Besides coaching, he now teaches U.S. History and Government and Citizenship at Pleasant Grove. The Soccer Team, has a re-cord of four wins and three loss-es so far this season. They have wins over Orem, Desert Hills, Delta and Westlake. Their loss-es have come from Lehi, Amer-ican Fork and Herriman High Schools. Their regular season wraps up on October 10 with a final region game against River-to- n at Riverton. Football has also seen some changes to the coaching lineup. Ron Halbert is working as the new Defensive Coordinator, Courtney Overstreet works with the Wide Receivers, Stan Raass is working with the Linebackers and Ricky Frank is coaching the Tight Ends. Going into game 3 for this 2013 season with two wins already under their belts, the Vikings are ranked 5, state-wide and 4 in 5A regions. The Vikings will play the Timber-wolve- s from Timpanogos High School, who also sport a 2-- 0 record with wins over Wasatch and Spanish Fork. PG is fa-vored by 21 points, but the es are packing some heat themselves. Timpanogos quarterback Jackson Dunford, in two games has passed for 589 yards and eight touchdowns. Receivers Trayce Esteban, Sa-ta- la Masina and Tyler Sweeten have been his main targets with plenty of yardage and two touchdowns apiece. This will be a big test for the Vikings as they hope to hang on to their winning ways with victories over Orem and Timpview High Schools. As time ran out on this game 3, Pleasant Grove put together an amazingly balanced effort on offense and defense. They beat Timpanogos 42-- 0 for their Homecoming game and defensively shut down the es high octane offense and frustrated their quarterback, Jackson Dunford. PG now has a 3-- 0 winloss record and Timpanogos has a 2-- 1 record. The Vikings will next play at Maple Mountain High School and Timpanogos will play their first region game against Sky-line. The Girls Volleyball Team has some large shoes to fill this year as they are following in the footsteps of last year's State Championship team. They started off with a win in August over Davis, but have fallen short twice since then with losses to Northridge and Riverton High Schools. They are preparing to enter the Rocky Mountain Tournament on September 6-- 7 with hopes of improving their winloss record. Region games will resume play on September 10 against Westlake on the Vi-king's home court. The cross country teams are competing as they have been to the Grass Relays at American Fork High School and a pre-regi- meet at West-lak- e. The boys appear to be doing better on the cross coun-try races and the girls are do-ing better on the relays. There are five invitational meets re-maining until region and state competitions begin in October. "We are in a region that is very tough as far as running goes," said Coach Mark Morrison. "Even our slower teams would place quite well at state, but they only take four teams," he continued. He added, "Ameri-can Fork and Lone Peak are the top dogs in our region, from there on down, it's a dog-fight." Pleasant Grove High School s Spencer Romney hauls in a great catch.
