Fall sports at Pleasant Grove High School will be history and in the rear view mirror, but highlights are to be enjoyed and noted. The football team, under the experienced coaching abilities abili-ties of Les Hamilton, ended the regular season with a 4-2 region record, sharing the Region 4 . championship with three other schools, Riverton, Herriman and Lone Peak. After holding on to a one point victory, 42-41, over Herriman, Her-riman, to end the regular season, sea-son, Hamilton mentioned that, "I don't think this has ever happened hap-pened before in state history where four teams have shared a region championship. I think it goes to show how tough this region is." In the first round of the S A Playoffs, Pleasant Grove played at Davis High School, who had a season record of 9-0 and were the Region 1 champions. The Vikings beat them 22-15. In this first round of the 5A playoffs, there were 16 teams competing, with the top 4 teams from each of the 4 region 5A schools. At the end of the day, teams from regions 3 and 4 had won their games over teams from regions 1 and 2. That does not happen often either. This may be a reason rea-son why coaches from the college col-lege level can be seen at season games. In the 5A Quarterfinals, Pleasant Grove played at Jordan Jor-dan High School. Despite an outstanding effort, the Vikings lost to the Beetdiggers 62-42. Austin Kafentzis and his offensive offen-sive driven teammates proved to be too strong for the Vikings. As the sun set on that game, the sun also set on the Viking's 2013 football season. They played well, had a 9-3 overall record and came home eager to start prepping for next year. An added note for the football foot-ball team, Senior Defensive Back Jacob Ivan was selected to the State Academic All American Ameri-can team for football with a 4.0 gpa- After sending Lone Peak into second place and being crowned State Champions in the 2012 Girls Volleyball Playoffs last year, the Vikettes took on the pressure of defending that crown in this year's giris volleyball volley-ball season and sent Bingham's girls team to 2nd place and again stood on that champion's podium podi-um for the 2013 season. This year the road to that championship went through Davis, Brighton, Fremont and Bingham. Coach Allyce Jones said that their main goal for the season was to peak at the right time and never stop improving. She placed the strength of her seniors as the main reason that the team came together and was able play so well. The Vikettes beat Bingham in four straight sets to claim their second consecutive championship champion-ship at Utah Valley University on Saturday evening, November 9,2013. They had a regular season sea-son record of 15-4 and 4-0 in the playoffs for a total of 19 wins and 4 losses for the season. The girls tennis team placed in the top 5 during the state playoffs tying with Alta and Viewmont. Sarah Clifford Clif-ford took second in her singles matches. Keslee Amussen lost in the quarterfinals for the singles sin-gles matches and Lexi Merrill lost out in the first round of her singles matches. In the doubles matches, Lisle Stevens and Bailee Cook lost in the first round as did Louisa Lou-isa Matheny and Caitlin Briggs. Even qualifying to participate in their 2013 season. They open against the Bingham Miners on Thursday, December 5, at Pleasant Pleas-ant Grove. Last year's Freshmen basketball bas-ketball team ended up on top of their season and season ending tournament in first place. Talking Talk-ing to Mark Hardman, the fresh- man coach, he said, "Last year's team really didn't have any one star. They all contributed to their success. Some can play great defense, some can shoot and some can really handle the ball quite well. They are a very balanced team. They will be hard to replace". This year's 9th grade team has played three games so far and they have won all three, beating Spanish Fork Jr., Mt. Nebo Jr and Lakeridge Jr. Hard-man's Hard-man's parting statement, "The weather outside is frightful, but the games inside are delightful!" : ilk -viX- )V':;r X-.: V- x. ,V.
