' 1 Quarterback Paul Hatch looks to deliver the pass downfield as Colton Babb Photo courtesy of PicMyKid.com by Kent Allen In late October, with the sun dancing around the swirling dark clouds and an occasional downdraft that chilled you to the bone, the Vikings had a 4 o'clock date with the Brighton Bengals to see who would go to the State Football Playoffs as the 4lh place finisher in Region 4. This game had to be played on a neutral field. The one chosen was at Alta High School. The last time the Vikings played there, they emerged as winners, beating the Alta Hawks 21-1- 6 last week. Being able to build a strategy, doing so on your most recent success also creates confidence in yourself and your teammates to keep the momentum going. And go it did. The first quarter was filled with great plays of the defensive type, meaning, they moved back and forth on the field, staying pretty much in the middle ranges. Just before time ran out for the quarter, new running back Manase Ulukivalola took off right up the middle and was on his way to scoring, but Newbold caught up to him and stopped him before he could score. It was a great 65 yard run, but our defense stepped up again and bent but did not break. Pleasant Grove punted twice and had a pass picked off by Brighton. Brighton punted once, lost a fumble to PG and had the ball as time ran out. The second quarter had Brighton still holding the ball and four plays into the new quarter, they scored on a 10 yard pass from quarterback Derek Newell to wide receiver Uaea Masina. Aaron Stoddard put up the PAT and the score was 7-- 0 for Brighton. After being stopped on their next possession, PG gave the ball back to Brighton and kept them pinned back against their own end zone. Upon being sacked behind their scrimmage line, and looking at a 4th and 14, the punt team ran on the field to punt. Receiving the snap at about the five yard line, the kicker didn't see our senior defensive back Quinn Newbold coming from the right side. Newbold blocked the kick, picked the ball up at about the two yard line and trotted into the end zone for the first touch down of the game for the Vikings. Winston Sorhaitz kicked the PAT and the score was tied at 7-- 7 midway through the second quarter. Newbold and Sorhaitz will be missed next year as they are both seniors and will be moving on. Just before the half, Brighton's kicker Aaron Stoddard kicked a 20 yard field goal and as the teams ran off the field. Brighton was in front with a score of 10-- 7. The third quarter was a repeat of the first quarter as both defenses played very well and kept the opposition's offense out of the end zone. PG punted once and had a pass picked off. Brighton punted twice and lost a fumble to PG. On Brighton's . first play of their second possession, PG's junior defensive back Parker Johnson picked off their pass and returned it to the 18 yard line of Brighton. Seven running plays, one quarterback sack and an offside flag against PG, sophomore running back Colton Babb scored on a one yard plunge to put the Vikings ahead since being tied in the second quarter. Mr. Sorhaitz kicked another PAT and PG was leading with five minutes to play, by a score cf 14-1- 0. Brighton got the ball back and did an admirable job of passing and dropping the ball, but with 3:29 remaining, PG had possession of the ball and 1, took their time, using every second they could to run a play and 2, provided excellent ball security (they held on to the ball) during the plays. They got a first down on the three yard line, with less than a minute to play, took two knees in a row and ran out the last few seconds on the clock. Pleasant Grove punted seven times, but three of those punts netted at least 50 yards each. That helped put the Bengals back against their goal line and kept them from attaining a favorable field position during possible turning points of the game. Brighton had 25 carries for 98 yards, with one of them being the 65 yard run by Mr. Ulukivalola in the first half, and 14 of 32 passes for 169 yards totaling 267 total yards. They had 203 yards during the first two quarters, which goes to show how tough the Viking defense became in the second half. The Vikings had 38 rushes for 141 yards and only 2 of 15 passing for 40 yards for a total of 181 yards of offense. It goes to show that it takes a complete team to win a game, and everyone has to contribute. And in this game, as well as the one before, everyone stepped up their efforts and whole team received the benefit. The Vikings then advanced to play Fremont High School, the number one seed in Region 1. They played at 1 p.m. on Saturday, October 30. rs r--- Cits'4 c S1 " , ... For a short while, the two schools traded leads. Hillcrest stayed with Pleasant Grove as Huskies Danielle DeClou, Valerie Middleton and Laura Child held their own at the net against Dahl, Biggs and Daniel. After the Huskies had moved within 8-- 6, a Hillcrest service error tripped them up. Hits from Daniel, Biggs and Dahl permitted the Vikings to pull away. Taking a 7-- 0 lead in the third game, the Vikings kept the Huskies from putting together an effective offensive. Hillcrest hurt itself through frequently making bad hits. Late in Game 3, Dahl's impress serving clutched the game for the Vikings as Fotu delivered some crippling blows to the Huskies. Pleasant Grove will be spending this weekend at the state tournament, hosted by UVU. by Dean Von Memmott The Pleasant Grove Vikings ended their Region Four volleyball campaign Oct. 28 by winning a three-gam- e match at home against the Hillcrest Huskies. Pleasant Grove made short work of Hillcrest by scores of 25-1- 0, 25-1- 3, 25-1- 0. Viking Coach Jamie Schapper said, "Tonight I gave all of my seniors a chance to start, because it was going to be their last home game. They paid their dues for these past four years, and they showed why they had earned the privilege to play tonight." Kim Dahl, Le'o Fotu, Audrey Biggs, and Annie Jenkinson showed no mercy to the Hillcrest front line, especially during the first game. It unfolded with Biggs' slugging sending the Vikings rowing out to an 11-- 2 lead. Pleasant Grove got a serving performance from McKell Staheli and Dahl. Their combined serving of aces kept the Huskies from staging any kind of comeback in the opening game. The final score was 29-- 6 for Fremont, Region l's first place team. But this was a team that was just go-ing through the motions. Fremont was ripe for picking but the Vikings appar-ently didn't want the game either. The first quarter was a defensive effort on both sides that kept everyone in their seats and paying attention to the game. Fremont punted once, lost a fumble to PG and turned the ball over on a fourth and seven pass that PG knocked away. The Vikings punted twice, lost a fum-ble to Fremont, and missed a field goal attempt. PG punted the ball away to end the quarter, and taking that following possession, Fremont drove the length of the field and scored. Two plays later, Fremont intercepted a Viking pass and three plays later scored again plus a two point conversion. At the end of the half, Fremont was up 15-- 0. The third quarter was mostly another defensive battle which did get PG's hopes up for another come from behind victory. I'm almost getting used to the Vikes spotting the opposition a few points before they quit toying with my emotions and get down to busi-ness. But, with under a minute to play in the third quarter, Fremont scored again and ended the third quarter 22-- The fourth quarter was all Fremont as they scored twice more and then sent in the second string-ers thus setting up the only touch-down PG scored. As I watched that high school disappear in the rear view mirror, I was still sting-ing a bit from the Fremont crowd singing "Season Over" several times. This year's Vikings have the talent and ability to compete and win in any sport, but the drive to do it was lacking on Saturday. For the season, PG's over-all record is 5 wins, 7 losses with a 3 record in region. Cooper Caldwell had 102 carries for 405 yards, McKay Madsen caught 34 passes 540 yards, Austin Heder had 117 tackles and Winston Sorhaitz scored 34 points with his toes. Not bad. But I think there may be some juniors and sophomores that may be looking forward to some pay-back games next season. Cross Country Finishes Fourth in 5A State Competition The cross-countr- y team is improving and making a name for itself as a powerhouse in the high-ly competitive 5A cross country. by Danica Baird Pleasant Grove High School's cross country team may be few in number, but the legacy they are leaving be-hind is anything but small. After earning second place at last year's 5A State Competition, high expecta-tions were placed on this year's team. They did not fail to disappoint. On October 20, at Sugar-hous- e Park in Salt Lake City, the cross country team faced off against American Fork, the ESPN nationally ranked number one team, and the very strong Davis team. The Vikings cross country team met the challenge head-o- n. The Vikings held their own claiming fourth place just 1 1 points short of the third place Bingham team, Davis took second, and Amer-ican Fork claimed first. Junior Haven Shelton dropped 28 seconds off of his last year's State time earn-ing tenth place with a time of 15:58.8, only three tenths of a second behind Davis' senior Austin Neuner. Shelton set a new school record breaking Evan Argyle's time by two seconds. Teammate junior Brady Olson earned thirty-fift- h with a time of 16:48, se-nior Mark Lyons placed forty-nint- h with a time of 17:02, senior Kyle Teusher placed fifty-fourt- h with a time of 17:10, and senior Schyler Harmon placed fifty-fift- h with a time of 17:12. Teusher also earned the prestigious Academic All-Sta- te for having a 4.0 GPA. On the girls side, se-nior Tabitha Borland earned fourteenth place with a time of 19:47, trailing American Fork's Lakyn Luxby by just three seconds. Senior Alicia Heninger claimed thirty-sevent- h with a time of 20:30.7 and also earned Academic All-Stat- e for her 4.0 GPA. On November 20, for the second year in a row the cross-countr- y team will compete at Nike Cross Country Nationals Southwest Meet at Toka Sticks Golf Course in Gil-bert, Arizona. This pres-tigious meet is a by invi-tation only and includes teams from Utah, Arizona, and Colorado.
