One of Council Member Marisa Wright's responsibili-ties is city beautification, and she's passionate about it. Last February, thinking about spring beautification projects, she said the hillside in front of the Public Works building looked neglected. "I have this vision of the city being a daffodil city- -' -- because deer won't eat daffo-dils," she said, adding that daf fodils should be planted in the Fall, not the Spring. Her vision for the city also includes volunteers, particu-larly on the beautification com-mittee, "five capable people with good aesthetic eyes." At the October 5 council meeting, she talked about re-sistance from other city offi-cials. "I didn't expect as much push back," she said, and got a laugh when she said of Coun-cil Member Jim Perry, "I'm friends with him on Facebook still." "You have people in this city willing to put in the time, for free," she said. "If not, it's just going to cost the city mon-ey." "I'm skeptical about elect-ed and appointed officials," Perry said, and apologized if he had been condescending ("Rude," Wright said) in teas-ing her earlier when discussing concepts for the community center at the golf course. Perry added that he didn't want to hand off the task of cre-ating landscape and beautification-d-esigns to "someone who's not accountable." Council Member Scott Jackman agreed. "We want to be careful when we don't know someone's expertise." Perry said he was not an expert in beautification and didn't feel qualified to judge designs. Both he and Jackman suggested having an expert re-view the committee's designs. "I'm totally okay with that," Wright said. However, resident Brent Ubell pointed out that expert opinions can be in the eye of the beholder and one expert may think another expert's de-signs aren't very good at all, and a third expert will disagree with both. "We're not asking for a design," Perry said, just a re-view of designs. "I don't want to approve designs myself," he added.
