Show nice event in question Because of the problems encountered last year with the Avenue of Flags, breaking of the poles and vandalism resulting In the loss of some Irreplaceable flags, there Is some question whether the holders of memorial flags will again be willing to loan them for this Memorial Day event sponsored by the American Tegion. We feel strongly that to discontinue this beautiful memorial would be a loss to both the meaning of Memorial Day, In the specific honoring ot the servicemen these flags represent, and to the community. The American Legion has made plans to overcome the problems, and although It Is not possible to restore flags lost a year ago, they feel they can Insure that no flag will be lost In the future. Members of the American Legion and Auxiliary will be asked to provide constant guardian service at both cemeteries during the hours the flags are flying. If the holders of these memorial flags feel such a constant watch still would not let them feel secure In loaning their flags, then the Avenue of Flags will be discontinued. It has been suggested that a fund raising drive be conducted to purchase flags for this purpose, and the Legion has voiced support of this idea as an alternative, however the flags, If purchased, would not hold as much meaning as memorial flags. We join the American Legion in asking for public comment, particularly from the holders of memorial flags, on the traditional Avenue of Flags on Memorial Day. |
