Show New math approach A new approach in the math department at the Moab Middle Mid-dle School is in operation this " year. A program of "cross grading" grad-ing" has been adopted. This means that in a class that is made up of seventh grade students, you might also find sixth grade or eighth grade students. The reason for this approach ap-proach is that many times a student will do quite well in all of their other subjects but has failed to learn basic math skills along the way. Since math would be the student's only weak subject, he could progress to the 6th, 7th, or 8th grades without learning some basic skills. In some cases, even 8th grade students stu-dents have not had adequate practice in the basic skills such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. The cross grading approach hopes to correct this deficiency. deficien-cy. The skill areas have been organized more or less according accord-ing to grade level. The 6th grade level will stress the addition, subtraction, multiplication multi-plication and division skills, the 7th grade level will focus on decimals, fractions, and measurements, while the 8th grade level will stress applications applica-tions of these skills and begin-ning begin-ning algebra. |
