(Spencer photo) Liens Learn About Snakes Men'.lvrs of the Moab Lioi'.s Club heard a presentation pres-entation Monday night by Moab writer. F. A. Rarn-es Rarn-es in Lions Park. The pre sentation dealt with some of Mr. Ramos' snakes that he lias captured over the years. Mr. Barnes brought with him a six foot Mexican Mex-ican Boa Constrictor which his daughter Had caught while on a p:cn?c in Mex- ico two years ago. The snake, which is one of 6 adult Mexican Boas owned own-ed by Mr. Barnes, weighed weigh-ed about 20 pounds and wqo na Vn'o- nrnnnH na n man's upper arm. In his discussion, Mr. Barnes gave a description of the habits and physiology physiol-ogy of snakes as well as history of their evolution. Many of the myths which surround the snakes were explained by Barnes and he stated that he felt that almost every snake had an inborn fear of man and would not strike unless startled or disturbed. Also shown by Mr. Barnes was a two foot long Rubber Boa which is: native to Utah. The snake,-stated snake,-stated Barnes, is adult and two feet is about max-, imum length for his spe-, cies. In addition to the. snakes which Mr. Barnes brought with him to the meeting, the Barnes family fam-ily has five other adult boas and 17 bnby boas which they have raised The 17 small snakes are about 25 inches long and am one year old. This species spe-cies of boa will grow to a length of about 15 to 18 feet, and has a life span of 25 years. Concluding his demonstration, demon-stration, Barnes fed the 0 foot boa a white rat that was about the size of a mouse. This demonstration demon-stration gave viewers a chance to see the workings of the snake's jaws which are hinged to permit in-gesion in-gesion of smoll animals. |
