Show Blanding High Paper Wins McKay Editorial Award Washington, D. C. - "Utah Representative Gunn McKay today announced that the Rattler, the San Juan High School school paper, had been selected as tie winner in the Congressman's monthly mon-thly editorial writing contest. The Blandnig, Utah, school was named for an editorial on the 26th Amendment granting the 18 year old tha right to vote. The winning editorial was written by an adopted Korean girl, Jini Lyman, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Barton F. Lyman Ly-man of Banding. Miss Lyman is co-editor of the schol's literary magazine and an editorial writer on the school paper. The advisor to the Rattler, Mr. Jerry Adams, described Jini as an excellent student who has learned the English language very well and who spent a great deal of time in preparing her editorial on the 18 year old vote. Congressman McKay commended com-mended Miss Lyman saying, "I agree with her comment that the approval of the 26th Amendment is another step in the ever expanding rights of citizens. I join her in encouraging en-couraging today's students to develop a sense of responsibility responsi-bility and awareness of what is going on." In November of 1971, Congressman Con-gressman McKay invited all high schools in Utah's First Congressional District to submit sub-mit copies of the school papers pa-pers and encouraging the school editors to use the editorial ed-itorial page to become involved in-volved in the issues of the day. The Utah Congressman then said he would select one outstanding editorial each month to be inserted in the Congressional Record. At ths end of the school year, the Editorial of the year will be named and a special award will be given. The San Juan Rattler was the first paper to be selected by Congressman McKay for special editorial recognition. |
