Recreation is Big Business on LaSal Mountains; Cool Climate Benons Summer Visitors This is the first in a series of 14 articles concerning U.S. Forest Service activities and areas of interest on the LaSal Mountains near Moab. . . Outdoor recreation is just one of the uses on the LaSal Mountains. Most of the outdoor out-door recreation use centers around camping, fishing or big game hunting. Other major ma-jor activities are auto touring, tour-ing, hiking .horseback riding, rid-ing, motorcycling and nature studies. There are four developed campgrounds on the Moab Ranger District,' Manti-LaSal National Forest Warner Lake, Oowah Lake, Pack Creek and Buckeye. Warner Lake Campground is the" largest lar-gest with 20 single units and two group areas. Water, grills, tables and sanitation facilities facilit-ies are provided. It is 27 miles from Moab. The elevation eleva-tion is 9400 feet which makes mak-es it an ideal place to get away from the hot summer days experienced in the lower low-er Moab Valley area. At. though Warner Lake is ' not stocked with fish, it provides - a fantastic - setting by reflecting re-flecting the snow ' capped mountain peaks in the ' back-ground.' back-ground.' Oowah Lake Campground has seven " single camping , units and one group unit. Water, tables, grills and san-' itation facilities are provid-' ed. Oowah Lake is stocked with trout by the Utah Division Div-ision of Wildlife Resources, and is the closest fishing lake, 25 miles from Moab. Both Oowah and Warner are fee areas. A daily permit is required at the entrance for each vehicle approaching the campground before using the provided facilities. If individuals wish to fish without purchasing the daily permit, vehicles may be parked at the campground entrance and occupants can walk the short distance to the lake to fish. Pack Creek Campground is just 15 miles southeast of Moab via paved road. Five single units and one group unit are available, equipped with tables, grills and sanitation sani-tation facilities. There is no water provided. There is no fee charged to use Pack' Creek Campground. Buckeye Campground is 15 miles above Paradox, Colo., or 75 miles from Moab. It is located in a beautiful pon-derosa pon-derosa pine setting surrounding surround-ing Buckeye Reservoir. Six single camp units with tables, grills and sanitation facilities are available. There is no water wa-ter in the campground but a developed spring is located beside the main road three miles below the campground. There is no fee charged for use in Buckeye Campground. Many people prefer to camp in undeveloped areas. Some of the more popular places are Medicine Lake, Beaver Lake, Blue Lake, Geyser Pass, and Pinhok. The higher elevations (Geyser Pass, La. Sal Pass, Medicine and Blue Lakes) are generally not accessible until the latter part of June. Camping is permitted in' all undeveloped areas. When camping in these areas, rec-reationists rec-reationists are required to carry out their own garbage. Please be careful with fire. ' In addition to family camp-outs,' camp-outs,' many' groups ' use these campgrounds: ' Boy " Scout, 'Girl" Scout,' Church ' groups, school ""gr6ups ' and' others -spend from a few hours to a week. 'using these facilities. Reservations . can be .made . through . the , Moab ; District Ranger's Office to assure That ' a site will be available.. " Pack - Creek,- Oowah and Warner Campgrounds can be reached via the LaSal Loop Road. This road is surfaced North from Moab, up ' the Colorado River through Castle Cas-tle Valley to the Warner Campground turnoff. There ' are nine ' miles of unsurfaced road from the ' Warner junction junc-tion to complete the loop to Highway. 163 South of Moab. This road is passable by passenger pas-senger car except during rainstorms. The total dis tance from Moab on the Loop Road is 60 miles and takes about 2V2 hours to travel and enjoy the scenery. |
