Show WHAT'S GOING ON ONBy rI Je t ed 61 1 I By Sam Taylor The number one item tem on the agenda this week seems to be bethe bethe bethe the Uranium Days celebration For two days Friday and Saturday Saturday Satur day a long line of ot events should make this one of ot the most memorable memorable memorable able week weekends of ot the year The outward signs of ot preparation preparation preparation tion have been rather slight this year however committee members mem memo b bets bers rs assure us that nevertheless a big blowout is on tap This years year's Uranium Days will have a high goal to shoot for tor The first staging of the event last fall tall proved to be bigger and better than anyone had expected I and so enthusiastic were townspeople townspeople towns towns- I people that it was then decided the celebration should be an annual an an- I nual affair r And a good thing It is too that we can still sell look forward to an I annual celebration Moab seems to have slipped away from community community community com com- celebrations in all the thel hustle and bustle of growing up The Fourth of ot July as well as the Twenty fourth slipped by virtually virtually virtually vir vir- unobserved The well re Grand county fair fall Isnow Is Isnow Isnow now just a memory Now we have I our Uranium Days and it is our sincere hope that it is successful again this year i Business people went all outlast outlast out last year to see that good looking concession booths were built along Center street And we have not yet ceased to marvel at the excellence of the parade made so soby soby soby by active participation from all types of ot business from all over this area We are sure that this years year's parade will again be a abig abig abig big success One pleasing feature is that the parade is not slated until 4 pm p.m. This will make it possible for more people to at attend attend at at- tend and will also go along way towards beating the heat Dances this year are planned for both nights of ot the celebration The first one will be held heid on Center street and the big Saturday Saturday Saturday Satur Satur- day dance at the Roller We Weare Weare Weare are sure they will be well sup ported The street dances were among the most popular of ot last years year's events Reports from the night show committee indicate that there will III be some very talented numbers numbers numbers num num- bers for presentation Friday night Cash prizes for or the winners win win- ners nets will make the competition even more keen So we expect to see you all at the Uranium Days tion Plan Pian to spend some time down town over the week weekend We are sure that you will be bewell bewell bewell well entertained Looking back each week into the files flies of ot this newspaper and It its predecessor The Grand Valley Valley Valley Val Val- ley Times copies which we have bound in volumes back to the first one printed in May 1896 turns up some interesting facts and some interesting faces Each week we are surprised to find names recorded In Moab's printed I history which have gone on to fame tame and fortune many years later Moab has been the scene of much activity in its relatively young life lite and many people allover all allover allover over the nation can recall a part the community played in their II lives ves We read with interest an optimistic optimistic optimistic op op- op- op statement from a young high school football coach rep reI recorded re re- re- re p I corded in the Times-Independent Times during 1927 Edwn R. R Kimball who was handling one of his first coaching assignments ts predicted that his Grand high Red Devils would do all right that year Mr Kimball later went on to his position position po po- po as football coach and later athletic director of Brigham Young University where he became became became be be- came well-known well all over the West in sport circles Another sport celebrity who spent a good de deal l of ot time In Moab in his early days was former former former for for- mer world lightweight wrestling champion Ira Dern During his Ws peak as a wrestler Mr Dern performed several times In Moab and later was instrumental in bringing many excellent fight cards from Salt Lake City to Moab We read with interest the account account account ac ac- ac- ac count Just a little over thirty years ago of the merger of several several several sev sev- sev- sev eral vanadium companies into a large company which held vast vastI I amounts of ot vanadium-producing vanadium property T The e man instrumental In the merger and president of the surviving company was F.
