Show needed improvement there Grand county commissioners were vero quick to report this week that they had no part in a reported agreement between officials of Southeastern Utah counties which switched highway construction priority from a stretch on Highway south of Moab to the Price Canyon section of 6 50 O in Carbon county The reported agreement was published in a metropolitan metropolitan metro metro- politan newspaper Saturday following a meeting of the State Highway Commission and area leaders at Price on Friday The report stated that the gathered officials had agreed that funds be bo diverted from highway construction construction construction con con- projects proposed between Woodside and Green River and Moab Airport and Kane Springs and be then transferred to the tho Price Canyon route Although local officials have denied having taken part in the so-called so agreement and although some local residents have voiced dissatisfaction with the proposed proposed pro pro- posed priority swap the wisdom of such a switch in planned construction seems good to us Granted Price Canyon is a considerable distance from Moab And granted little in the way of State Highway Highway Highway High High- way building has been done lately on needed routes in our area Drca save the highway down river And granted we would like to see more emphasis placed on finishing the road up the Colorado river to Dewey Dewcy and a start made on the n needed ded road to Dead Dood Horse Point But transferring priority from the Blue Hill Bill stretch of highway south of Moab to Price Canyon simply seems like good sense to us Price Canyon has for half a century been the greatest greatest greatest great great- est bottleneck to this scenic section of Utah Its sharp curves curves and constant state of disrepair cause even the most moat hardened traveler to look for a better route And with Price Canyon snow-packed snow and icy most of the i winter Moab's warm wann winter climate draws little from the metropolitan Wasatch front during winter months Completion of this badly needed ne-eded stretch of highway into a safe weather alt road will be a great asset to Southeastern Utah It is of much greater importance importance- at present than any construction along the route of Highway Highway High High- way nearer to Moab Price is in Carbon county and a considerable distance distance distance dist dist- ance from Moab But Price Canyon road construction could easily be listed as the greatest single highway need that Southeastern Utah has ever possessed |
