Mr Byrd you built bum your fOur office on skids so that it t t could be moved easily To the Editor The Times Independent Moab Utah Dear Deal Sam In answer to the letter of November 2 1961 1951 from Byrds Byrd's Agency I dont don't have the time on my hands hand that tho the author of or this letter seems to have However How blow ever I do believe that my ex and the natural natura feeling I t have because of being a native son of Moab is reason enough for or my concern In this Issue I 1 do remember about seven years ago when there were pea peo- pie who came hito Moab and were interested In making this home because of the opportunity opportunity opportunity they saw here Many of these people would have liked to buy homes at that time However How JIow- ever this wa was an Impossibility subsequently the trailer sales folks bad iad ad a landslide business in tr trailer sales Many trailer dwellers who purchased trailers at that time tune a are still till here and can n nut not be transient people as many of at them will wOl tell teU anyone they have never lived In a trailer home till tUl they came here to 1 Moab and were unfortunately forced Into one I 1 em ens not sure of the uranium any more than anyone 8 el else cIte however I d dd take lake this into Inlo eon On dd some lome of the shafts In this territory including ones mentioned by the author have hy been bern closed dosed do down before at different dif dlf different dif dif- ferent times and there has been In bad times more even tn employ employ- meat ment t here than anywhere I 1 id d doubt is this is a major Issue at t this time As to the qualifications or dis die disqualifications qualifications of would be PitA home bome owners O If there is not enough development developments to the growth w we e will wUl suffer a much greater loss los that being we will wUl not have the would would-be homeowners Concerning Industry Industry Industry-if if there It La no planning for the future concerning industry actually we have hae ho he problem with the water wa wa- wa ter tar to supply their needs The wheels of Industry do not stand standstIll standstill standstill still while a territory prepares for them to come In to Do we say ay sayto sayto to industry 9 If It you will promise to come to our territory and wait watt for us ig to develop elop enough to you we will rev rev- ek eop elop p enough to you well we'll start I dont don't believe we weare weare weare are in a position to do this I would rather not compare Moab to some of the other cities named Probably this a lot pride but I also have a few tew tangible reasons We In Moab are not as some of those other cities dependent solely on one Industry industry indus Indus- try we have more to look forward forward for for- ward to now than ever before This is a time when broad minds and open eyes are needed to see seea a good substantial future for our young city I am afraid one thing Is being overlooked which Is very Important Im ha- This is the fact that Moab isn't what Is known as a areal areal areal real boom town or wouldn't have to be If we do not by our own misunderstanding choke the life out of her herby by refusing to develop her finer liner points such as industry tourist attractions and lovely climate As it is now I would rather compare Moab with a town fr in Colorado which ten ten- years ago had a population of with no future le The parents of this community It ity asked these two questions Why dont don't our young people care to further their education and why hy dont don't they stay In hi their home town when they attain adulthood The answer to the first question was found to bethe be bethe bethe the young ones had seen enough progress to care about It and to the second question this answer ans axis war came caine Even these kids knew very little about progress and didn't think they had much future future fu fu- ture lure any place else they still knew they had even less future where they were In fact the parents were handing a dead still world to their children not realizing what a time it is starting start start- ing leg it to revolve again When this problem was the people of the community began trying to improve their own state by developing and inviting Inviting in inviting in- in industry and tourist trade Into that territory by advertising advertis ing log the natural resources They Improved their radio station and television Since that time the population of ot Pueblo Colo Cola has raised from to approximately and Is expected fo 10 o double In the next five years The Phe population of the United States is increasing ever every day New Industry which brings pros pros- parity erity Is being born each day I say lets let's give it a natural birth birthplace birthplace birthplace place right here by opening our minds and our eyes to oar or own land and of opportunity It Is wen well understood that there here are two classes of people In n th world world world-so some me doers and arid some ome who watch Mr Byrd My taxes on my trailer over the past seven years have ave been between 60 and 70 dollars a year x and I as a trailer home owner graciously accept your apology However since reading your letter I have been wondering whether you want a growing city or Just a ab b boom om town and also how long longou volI ou Intend to make Moab your home ome DONALD J.
