Show OUTSIDE COMMENT fair or unfair 1 An Aspen Colorado Times editorial reprinted by bythe bythe bythe the Grand Junction Daily Dally Sentinel last week using Moab as the tho classic example of mans man's inhumanity to nature caused caused quite some stir among those who saw it and for forthe tho the benefit of those who might have missed it we have a printed re-printed on the bottom Of jf this page If there weren't some points made mado in the editorial which we We agree with we might be bo a little easier stirred up over the whole matter As it is the e only really irritating irritating irritating tating thing about the tho Aspen editorial is the pompous attitude of the writer who among other failings never nover learned the proverb Dont Don t throw rocks when you live tin In a gloss glass house Hardly a a. month has gone by that this column has not t called for zoning restrictions in Moab Valley outside outside outside out out- side the city limits Moab City itself is not really bad I In spite of what the Aspen Sage Sago might lead people to believe For a community which grew from 1000 to in less than tihan two years Moab has done an admirable admirable able be job of making its growth look somewhat managed and council groups have done a good job of continually ing zoning laws within the city This does not mean that the Grand county commission commis sion Is free from criticism in the matter Upper Moab Valley looks mi miserable rable lets let's face it And the primary reason n It does proper restrictive zoning laws were not passed AND ENFORCED ten years yeah ago when the growth started There rare are also lots Inside Moab th that t continue to toj j the communitY B. B pp appearance an even eyen Y though ug the he c council uncil has used its full limit of verbal persuasion n fry try trying frying frying ing to got them cleaned up Someone should be held to account for each and every one of these Having spent several long week-ends week in communities communities communities ties along th ili the W Western stern Slope of Colorado last summer and fall faU including those in the Aspen area we come comeback comeback comeback back to Moab feeling quite a bit has been accomplished here Our first boom is less than one decade old and already al already aly al- al ready y the e community Is beginning to shape pe itself up with curb and gutter newly remodeled buildings more In the vay o of paved streets and many other many other indications of a progressive attitude with an eye toward the future The examples in the Intermountain area arro mostly all communities which became famous overnight due to precious metals base metals etc in the late have not been th the best examples for a modern-day modern boom town to follow In all except the couple of instances where recreation seeking eking tourists have entered them with capital cap cap- ital and initiative they are much the same as as as' they were years ago much more proper examples of mart marl made ugliness than Moab could possibly rep represent ent in a hundred years Moab is not above criticism and has a long way to go before it can rid lid itself of od f all the unsightly the unsightly features along its streets But it is traveling in the right direction direction direction tion and earh year sees some improvement There is even some hope now mw that the county area might be blessed with zoning restrictions before too much longer The only question still remaining to us We wonder what it really reaDy was that bothered the Aspen editor when he visited Moab recently |
