Show PERSONALLY I SPEAKING e. e A Loiter Letter from Tho The Editor i I Dy Oy Sam Taylor Flying to Salt Satt Lake City carly early early ear car ly this week weel I wan wa privileged to lo take the long loop way around with airport manager Jim Hurst of Green River Both ing business In the Capitol regarding regarding re reo re- re garding river marathon activIties activIties activities we had decided to fly up some time ago alCO but another stop In Rock flock Springs Wyo for Mr Hurst necessitated the long trip During the flight we traveled over the fabulous Book Dook Cliffs country to the Basin over Vernal the Flaming Gorge dam and Into Wyoming Wethen Wethen We Wethen then traveled across Southern i Wyoming and entered Salt Lake valley through the mountains to the northeast We have asked for nicer weather or for a more beautiful time of the year The variety of or fall faU colors all along the way on the deserts and Inthe in inthe inthe the mountains was beautiful But upon arriving back in our own area we found the colors In the La Sal mountains better better better bet bet- ter than anything we had seen all day Which Just proves a point I have havo made mada many times you can find many places that attract you for one reason or another but hut for excellence of scenery for the tremendous variety cf of hot desert red redrock redrock redrock rock canyons or cool mountains mountains mountains moun moun- Southeastern Utah Is hard to beat And to top It off we have the weather and the people to match the other fine attributes S. S For the past several years we have received on fairly regular intervals a column which we have labeled A Letter to Midge This column written by a fairly recent resident of or Moab who has become fondly I- I attached to the area has dealt with many subjects and has been read by many man Occasionally we hav read some of these columns columns' that reminded us of a Moab we can from childhood childhood child child- hood and apparently other other- readers have reacted simi simi- For this week we re received received re- re A Letter to Pepita signed by a writer who calls herself Rosita expanding on on a recent Midge column We liked the letter and belIeve believe be be- lieve you will find It inter Inter- esting DEAR DEAK PEPITA PENTA Your letter which you wrote some time ago concerning your enjoyment of the J. J Willard NIchols Nichols Nichols Ni Ni- chols home and yards on Rose Bose Tree Lane brought forth some nostalgic memories to me also You see I have lived here all my life practically and so knew Rose Tree Lane as It was once before It became a paved city street and a subdivision of modern modem beautiful homes You would have been delighted delight delight- ed to have seen Rose Bose Tree Lane and the Nichols home when Aunt Lottie Larsen Mrs Nichols' Nichols mother resided there among all her beautiful flowers flowers flow flow- ers era and trees The entire block now occupied by the homes and grocery store was a fertile field of or growing corn com a and d part ar of it was a fragrant flew field J or alfalfa AUnt Lottie had her own 1 milk cows which provided the most delicious milk and rich cream Well I remember sitting sitt sitt- ing log under the grape arbor at atthe atthe atthe the entrance of her yard sippIng sippIng sipping sipp sipp- ing a glass of cold milk or sometimes a glass of grape- grape juice from her own grapes Her flowers were out of this world and it Is 15 a great tribute to Aunt Lottie that Mrs NIchols Nichols Nichols Ni NI- chols and her other daughters Mrs Essie White and Mrs Mada Mada Ma Ma- da Williams still carry carr on the raising of or flower gardens and enjoy It Just as as much as their I mother did In fact It U runs in the family that all the children chil chil- dren circa enjoyed raising flowers Now that the circus has come cometo cometo cometo to town I w was s also recalling once wh when a circus came to town and arranged with Aunt Lottie u Larsen to to set up their tents on the tM fields now occupied pied pled by houses on Nichols Nichola Lane Jane and Just juat south of th tM the D 1 and J JG G Grocery Somehow the circus operators neglected ted to pay their thelt rent neat as agreed upon and coIncidentally co- co Incidentally during the night the ue big Wg ditch of water overflowed over flowed its Ita bonks banks and flooded the entire grounds The next out morning it wa was necessary to h hitch ch up the elephants t to pull out all ail th the draw trailers filled tilled wJ with th wild animals 1 It was really ft a sight to behold to see Me seethe the big We l elephants ta tugging and aad pulling g all Use the 0 drew circus CUi w ou out om ef at t tb e YM Yes Row RoM Tre Laa Jaae Lane has iu rainy for Of or lilt iss old tint te r ty N |
