M Knight elementary school by the principal Joseph E. E Allen Studies of ot other boomtowns boomtowns boomtowns boom- boom towns had shown considerable retardation as a result of overcrowding overcrowding over over- crowding double sessions teacher teach teach- er turn over and related problems pro pro- Mr Allens Allen's report was undertaken to check the situation situation situa situa- tion In Moab Also many other problems were studied such ashow as ashow ashow how well newcomers were gettIng getting gett gett- gettIng ing along and how well the children children chil chit dren from many places had accepted accepted ac ac- accepted each other and what the children thought about the local school and about what they were being taught The questions of homework teacher discipline and double sessions were considered by pupils pupils pu pu- pils pus for example All children In grades four fout five and six six- took part last year The study has recently been completed and has been accepted accept accept- ed by the University of Utah as the doctoral thesis of Mr Allen A bound copy has been given to the library of the school Achievement levels found In Indicated Indicated In- In indicated some retardation but they were much better than those reported by studies made In some other communities which had undergone similar growth and had related problems Of the three grades studied sixth grade pupils did the best and fourth grade pupils scored the tle lowest Sixth grade pupils were above national norms In most subjects the report Indicated Partially as a result of the achievement test findings the parents of the lowest achievers were called in and a cooperative I plan was worked out to better help these children Also several several several sev sev- eral of the teachers experimented experiment experiment- ed with teaching techniques that had proven very successful in other districts These special programs programs programs' were successful on on the whole and are arc also reported Inthe in inthe inthe the i study Achievement tests given this year to last years year's fourth grade pupils showed practically no re retardation retardation re- re in terms of class ave aye averages rages and scores exceeded national national national na na- na- na averages in most areas as reported in an earlier article this year Individual pupils however still need special help Crom from teachers and parents and the school is giving as much individual individual individual in in- attention to such children children chil chil- dren as possible Findings of the study indicated Indicated ed that much moving around h hadnot had hadnot d not hurt the children that that vere lvere studied These children were were being being be bee ing well accepted by their class class- mates Again however some individuals in in- individuals needed special help Nearly all all all' of the children Indicated indicated In in- indicated that they liked the school Only about two per cent indicated that they disliked It on the anonymous questionnaire Interestingly enough about 29 per cent of the children thought that they usually did not have enough homework though a few thought they had too much And only 11 per cent of ot the pupils really disliked having double sessions Those attending the morning session of school on the whole liked it better than those attending the afternoon I I session I GOLD STAR MOTHERS VISIT The Gold Star mothers of the American Legion Auxiliary visIted visited vis via Mrs Jesse Scharf at the home of her son Eban Friday afternoon Guests Of ot honor besides besides be be- sides Mrs Scharf were Mrs leona Lcona t Dalmus almus and Mrs Mettle Mattle Cleveland Other guests included ed Mary Pogue Lillian Boulden Gwyn Meador Maggie Taylor Ina Young Hallie Tibbetts Ruth Johnson Helen M.
