Coleman Andrews who quit the treasury department because of this unfairness In a recent appearance before the Press Club In Washington George Humphrey secretary of the treasury was asked about these attacks from a man who knew the picture from his years of being behind behind behind be be- hind the scenes Humphrey leaped to the defense He started out by saying that he wanted to see taxes reduced but It must be done over a period of time for the best Interest of the country Then he goes into the usual political double talk that he knew of no other way to raise the money for the government security and the giveaway program that put the fabulous radio and television jackpots to shame Humphrey goes on to tell the public that since we are going to have an income tax he thinks it Is unfortunate to have the fairness of the tax the existence of the tax questioned when so many honest straightforward American people are burdening themselves to pay their share or running this country Could one hear him saying under his breath Especially In an election year It is our belief that it is not a question of having an income tax To our way of thinking that is the fairest way of taxation by which a man pays according to his ability to earn But under the terms of the present income tax law that same man pays beyond his ability to earn If he has ability to earn the present terms of the law discourages him to the extent that it is slowly choking the life from free tree enterprise on which the American merican freedom has been built |
