Show THIS t THAT T and the OTHER by Mack Turner Over the weekend we fared forth forthover forthover forthover over roads that varied from paved highway to something akin to mis- mis taken aken identity and once s several veral miles followed a a cour cou course se a that was wasn was wasfie n no fie more road than than thant t that at followed by y the early pioneers who first brought rought civilization Into the west We passed through a gate and fence tence ence 40 odd 40 odd f feet et long that fenced off over acres of range ranga land and We passed fantastic rock formations and paused at one poInt where we could view the La Ln als the Blues the Henrys and far it to the distance almost lost in inthe inthe the lie blue haze could be seen another anther an nn other ther range we guessed to be the Navajo mountain In adding something to our ever iver growing list of places we have lave visited in this area we again got ot lost and found ourselves at atthe atthe atthe the same destination that we have reached cached on two other trips Into the same area area at at t the head of Shafer trail rail At long last we reached our goal and stood on Grand View Viewpoint Viewpoint point joint and saw a sight we started out to see a bit more than a year ago Shifting sands on the tho road at athe atthe atthe the he Neck turned us bacK then The other day our good friend Bates Wilson Informed us that this his road had been fixed and the theand sand and replaced with shale and could be used by family cars and was no longer a jeep only affair We got through but several times Imes stopped and ran our own survey urvey before venturing over a afew afew few ew spots on the road We found a afew afew few ew spots that had become rather badly adly washed by recent rains whatever they are We planned to o report these damages to county commissioners but encountered Winford Bunce trying to navigate the he same course We teamed with Don Robinson local ocal teacher newsman and television television tele tele- vision star and spent a very enjoyable enjoyable en- en afternoon As usual we saw aw many new sights over old routes outes Our first trip over that route we breezed down the road to the head lead of Shafer trail looking for forthe forthe the le route to Grand View Point Paid We Ve were on that Junket with Ellis Foote We then retraced our steps picked out a new road and reached the he Neck only to be turned back backy backby by bv y the deep sands Another trip with Charles O. O Wight with Dead Horse Point atthe atthe at athe the he goal ended Up at the same spot pot before we realized we had missed the road Sunday we kept close lose watch for signs and again ended up at the top of Shafer trail We discovered the only sign atthe atthe at athe the he proper turnoff read only Upheaval Upheaval Up Dome and made no menIon mention mention men- men tion Ion of Grand View point Beyond this the road marked Is Is' with ampie ample ample am am- pie signs but the key sign is mis mis- sing We discussed this oversight with officials official and hope that soon soona a sign will be erected to guide the tourist groups that might venture forth orth on such a jaunt as we took Sunday The Neck offers quite a a spot and besides the famed fence an and gate found there It offers a spot spat where one can stand and look one way down a sheer canyon drop Into eroded beds of the Colorado and to the other direction into canyons cut through the centuries by the Green river as the two streams rush toward their union just below Grand View Point Because of these sheer drops a fence across the Neck protects the bulge beyond from cattle wanderIng wander Ing away from the home range pinched off between those two great rivers Beyond the Neck the road many times skirts the edge of the canyon rim and affords views that are breath taking in their magnitude From Grand View Point one can look beyond the rivers riven and see r view that few spots can match One such view Is of fantastic roc formations that very closely re resemble resemble resemble the famed Needles area which lie He far to the south For the above reasons we carsee car see why Grand View Point Is r scenic attraction of the area Fo the same reasons given here wr can understand why so few vial the he area It lacks the splendor of Dead Horse point In many ways but ut is just different enough In its view to make it a trip worth takIng tak tak- Ing ng just to see that little dif dlf- Terence ference Moab has been well n well blessed with the he kind of scenery that attracts the ic tourist The recent upsurge in uranium mining of this area has caused roads to be built into some of those areas that prior to the discovery discovery discovery dis dis- dis- dis covery of ore here were beyond the reach of the tourist Some of these mine roads r. r re re- quire a jeep but many of these will take the family passenger car carat cart at t somewhat reduced speeds which som sometimes times amount to little littlemore littlemore littlemore more than a crawl We cant can't help but wonder why someone hasn't come up with the thelea Idea lea of paid tourist tours by somene some some- one lone ne with a fleet t of Jeeps on the order of the tours that are con con- ducted out of Pen Denver r and Colorado Colorado Colo Colo- rado ado Springs to scenic spots of those hose areas Ichabod the office boy says he knew the soup he had for dinner was as good it had bad 14 carrots |
