Show THIS THAT and the OTHER by Mack Turner There has hu been a lot of talk floating about the streets of Moab for the past few weeks about new fields of scenic splendor that could be opened up to the tourists within a few miles of Moab The fantastic rock formation wonderland lies at the present In an area that la is remote from the beaten path and far too d difficult dif to prove tempting to the tourist who as a whole seldom seldon can be lured to leave the beaten path The The tourist usually wants It so well beaten that It has been paved and perhaps a four tour lane highway We can remember a conversation conversation conversa conversa- tion Lion that we once had with a nun man who found much food for thought In n this fact Doc Campbell owned own ed the Heart Heart Bar Bar ranch on the road to the Gila cliff dwellings on the edge of the tile Gila Wilderness Wilder ness north of Silver City N N. M. M Tourists were Docs Doc's business and he worked hard to get a road Into the cliff dwelling area over which he was sort of an overseer Docs Doc's Idea was for just justa a road and he worked hard lard to get it It Jeep trails and andack pack ack trip trails were not enough to o attract the tourists Once Doc told us something that hat we have stopped to think about a good many times since hen then In looking around the tour tour- st west we have become more and nd md more convinced that it Is true Tourists spend millions of dol dol- jars ars per year Doc once told us But what I am waiting for is for forthe the Jie tourist to discover the real realest west vest and start coming out here o see it it We had b been en of the opinion that the he west was doing pretty well un n the tourist dollar They were spending a lot of money and we started to take issue with Doc and argue that tourists had al already already al- al ready rady made tJ this 3 great discovery an and usi using g it freely Doc then proceeded to show us how far wrong we were Although not too much impressed at the time we listened to his ideas on the matter These ideas were that tourists missed the real spots of beauty simply because these were hard to reach They went to the resorts they toured the paved highways and saw a lot of beauty From some resorts they did muster up enough hardiness to take pack trips into the real wilds But the vast majorIty majority majority major major- ity of them never got off the well traveled highways These tourists then went home and told the home folks they had seen the west Since that time we have talked talk ed to a lot of them More and more we have become convinced that Doc Campbell knew a lot lotmore lotmore lotmore more about tourists than we knew perhaps more than we will willever willever ever know The uranium prospector the fellows who were on the streets lof of Moab about the time we landed land ed cd here told ys lis stories of places about Moab that no tourist guide will show you They also told us how hard such places were to toI reach A few backed up their I stories with pictures This new scenic wonderland wonderland of Courthouse Towers r recently uncovered uncovered uncovered un un- un- un covered as a tourist mecca is Just one of many that we feel sure are here These just need a road to get to them and they will willbe willbe be discovered We are sure there are people In n Moab who have been on top of the high cliff wall west of town and south of the river But we haven't found one who would admit It It has been a desire of our own to get up there and make pictures But we are arc not mountain climbers Now we are told there is a Jeep road that takes cne one right to the top but we still haven't found anyone who could guide such a venture But we have heard some great stories of spots up there that would be well worth th the trip We have heard of other spots that offer great Interest as sight sightseeing sightseeing sightseeing seeing spots But Dut like getting to the top of the cliffs it is a tough area to get into Therefore few tew people have seen the beauty of these spots Maybe they wouldn't live up to advance billing but we have seen enough of bf f this country to expect anything The uranium prospector found a lot of beauty in the country The uranium Industry built a lot lotof lotof lotof of access roads into some of these spots Spits The roads are still no more than jeep roads but they are starts in the right direction Perhaps Doc Is b right Someday the tourists will discover the west And when they do the Four Corners Comers area should come in n for tor tormore more than its share of tourists and the tourist dollar It is certainly our firm belief that the road project into this thU newly discussed area is one that deserves the utmost support tram from all levels We haven't seen the new spot spit but are looking forward to getting the chance in the n near r future Ichabod the the office office boy says saya this being election year it might e a fine thing that radio recap recep- Inn Jon here isn't so 0 good |
