Show Natural Resources Law Soon To Be Added to Utah Courses A far reaching program o of teaching and research in the field of natural resources law will wilt be offered next fall by the College of Law at the University of or Utah Dr Daniel J. J Dykstra dean of the he College of Law outlined the proposed program as one which would in the graduation of ol lawyers lawyers awyers well versed in what Isnow is isnow isnow now a relatively neglected field of law Staff members In the College of Law believe such a program programs Is s desirable in view of the com come plex ilex economic political and social soc soc- soc soc-I al lal questions which are arising In n the development of the West's natural resources resources ore ore oil and gas water and land To initiate the program the College of Law will one faculty acuity member to work solely In n the field of natural resources Us His duties would cover five areas I 1 I. To teach such courses as oil and gas mining water and pubic public public pub pub- lic ic land law to students regularly enrolled in the College of Law 2 2 To carry on an instructional program for members of the pra icing bar through legal institutes symposiums and lecture series This phase would also include preparing and distributing legal bulletins monographs and other publications 3 To create and direct research research re reo re- re search activities into various phases of mining oil and gas water and public land law The comparatively new developments developments' In n the field of uranium have created created created cre cre- cre- cre the need for determining legal egal policies in this area 4 To collect a library on subjects subjects sub- sub relating to natural resources law aw which would be available to o students practicing lawyers I Ilaw and the public 5 5 To cooperate with and supplement supplement sup- sup lement work by other departments departments depart depart- ments of the University Work In n this area would be with such departments as the College of Business in the field of IntermountaIn Intermountain intermountain inter- inter mountain economy and the geology gy department on the subject of natural resources utilization Robert W W. Swenson professor of law at the U will teach the new ew course Professor Swenson has las been instructing In the property prop prop- erty law area under which the course ourse will fall administratively He le Is a graduate of the UniversIty Ity sIty of Minnesota law school and Joined the U staff In 1953 after practicing In New York City with Ithe he the firm of Davis Polk Ward Ward- well Sunderland and Kiendl Dean Dykstra said that while some 38 law schools in the country country country coun coun- try offer a course or two in some phase of natural resources I Ilaw law few law schools have concentrated concentrated concentrated con con- a sizable portion of their facilities for study and research research research re re- re- re search in this field The new U course will help fill this serious void in legal research He said that part of the funds for financing the proposed venture venture venture ven ven- ture once it is underway may maybe maybe maybe be obtained from local industry and professional foundations |
