Wilcox Day daughter of a pioneer family came to Moab in n 1882 in a covered wagon pulled by y oxen from Mt Pleasant Utah Her lIer story of how they made madeo I do o Is recorded in the files of or orthe he the Daughters of at Utah Pioneers Most of our living came from our cows and garden produce Mrs Day said The Th cows gave milk and we made butter Garden produce consisted consisted con con- mainly of potatoes squash and tomatoes The tomatoes were dried for far winter nl use th the e potatoes were stored In a pit and some of the squash were dried and some stored away in pits Wild berries onions and sego selo roots were gathered for summer use and then some dried for winter Grain was ground In hi a coffee mill to make flour Occasionally there was pork and molasses The molasses I was made from sugar cane Clothing was a greater reater problem as described by Mrs Day Wool was gathered off the brush where the sheep trailing through would lose it The wool was washed carded and spun into yarn and then woven into cloth to make jeans for men and dresses another anc an and other clothing for tor women Coloring the homespun cloth called for ingenuity The Wool was colored with blue to make blue dyed with some kind of herb for red and sagebrush was boiled to make yellow according to Mrs Day There were no short-cuts short in the process from gathering the woo wool to sewing hand-sewing the clothing Some cloth called factory could b be bought once in awhile Mrs Day recalled and this cloth was unraveled unraveled un un- raveled to make thread Stockings were knitted by hand for both men and women When the stockings were worn out they were unraveled and made into blankets Shoes were made at home hom for tor the small children and some o othe of the larger ones had to go without shoes hoes of any kind Candles were used whenever they could be made at home Th They y were made from beef tallow and last very Ion long When they were all gone a bitch was used made by twisting a string together anc and laying it in a pan of wax or grease and lighting the end which stuck out |
