I Last Sunday we dropped down Into Montezuma canyon Another scenic must on the the- tourist schedule schedule schedule dule book we may someday write has been added to 10 the list of places we think each tourist should be sure and see when visiting this part of the country But we wouldn't advise much traffic for what is jokingly called a road that hugs the side of the canyon and comes comes comes' to a end dead at the mine the the- folks we went with went to see Montezuma canyon does not I have the eroded splendor of Dead Horse point Fisher point or the Arches National Monument The TheLa TheLa TheLa La Sal mountains have many valleys valleys val val- leys that will match if not surpass surpass surpass sur sur- pass Montezuma canyon for beau beau- ty But for what we were told Sunday Sunday Sunday Sun Sun- day by D Doc e Lamb one who has spent many days in the the Montezuma Monte Monte- Mont zuma canyon the beauty of the spot is interlaced with the rich lore of the historic west An old eld cabin which w we were told was built in 1883 was the first Mormon house built built in in that part of ot Utah It stands and andis is often in use as a camp site We were also told that Montezuma Montezuma Montezuma Monte Monte- zuma canyon w was w s quite popular as a hideout for lor many bands o of outlaws one of the most famous being the Dalton brothers whose greatest fame was in the Kansas Kansa and Missouri country Like most such places theris there ther is the usual story of buried trea trea- sure The story is that one of ot th the more famous settlers there durIng during dur dur- ing lag its day of outlaw population population tion left leCt buried in Montezuma Montezuma Montezuma Monte Monte- zuma canyon There have been bee many who have searched for tor this thi treasure but none have reported success From what little we have heard the history of Montezuma canyon canyo must indeed be one of great in in- terest We would indeed like to t thear hear more of the early days o othis of this gash in old Mother Earth I I American history is a blend o of various sections of ot the country tied very closely to some era The eastern seaboard dates its history to the American Revolution Dix Dix- ie le stakes its claims to its history of ot the Confederate states Texas tells its history under six flags But the eleven western states stages the Rocky Mountain empire boasts of a history that offers as much color as any of these the history of the hardy pioneer who followed the sun across this great land Historians have found much of it hard to pin down and to part the legend and folklore from the true rue facts But legend and folk folk- folklore folklore lore got its start from true facts and usually has a firm foundation of ot fact beneath it it Both sides of ot the picture certainly certainly present good reading and good stories V Ichabod the office boy says his wife calls him Legend She still hasn't figured out i if he is true or false fase j |
