Show School Leaders II I I Alarmed Over Non-Graduates Non More than one out of every four students who enter Utah's high schools fall fiaH to graduate This fact tact was disclosed this week by Utah Foundation the private non profit non tax research organization Foundation analysts point out that public high schools in Utah graduated students last year However more than 3 3 Utah students who had been enrolled in the tenth grade 3 years previous did not graduate graduate- in 1954 0 Of these total dropouts outs between be tween the tenth grade and graduation grad grad- graduation cation 38 38 per cent occurred between be tween the tenth and eleventh grades 44 per cent occurred be tween the eleventh and twelfth grades and 18 per peor cent occurred after the student had ent entered red the twelfth grade In 1954 th there were Utah high school students students stu dents who did not graduate even though they had been enrolled in the twelfth grade during the year In most Instances according accord ing to the report the out drop-out rate has been somewhat hat higher high er for boys than to Wr girls This difference has narrowed dur ing lug recent years The Utah Foundation stud study shows that high school dropouts drop drop- outs occur in every Utah com oom Districts with rising populations appear ar to be affected affect ed to about the same extent as districts with declining lations Large districts are affected af f as are the small districts outs Drop occur with equal equall frequency frequency fre quency in both hoth the rural dist dist- districts n ets and the urban districts The Foundation reports that the State School Office has recd recognized rec the problem and is cur Dently trying to find some of the needed answers A question has been sent to some former for mer Utah high school students and considerable data have already al ready been collected by this means In addition a Utah State Follow up Follow vp Committee consist ing of twenty persons has been formed I to study the problem i |
