A and M M. will have the best chance Texas A A. A and nd M. M Is practically a military college These men will be given the chance to complete their military training A fellow like Bob Smith a great back will have a terrific year Spring practice will go along just about the same But the big gaps raps will open in May and June on through the summer By next September the draft losses and the enlistments will be heavy for everybody everybody every body except Army and Navy What about the Future In World War II it was the Navy that saved college football The Navy and Captain Tom Hamiltons Hamilton's Preflight teams Army made no move in footballs football's direction al although al though Army's West Point team led the pack Any number of college stars stare moved into the two academies and more than a few moved out again before elore the war was over Navy especially lost Jost a big portion of her earlier talent For Fot a while such teams as Notre Dame and Michigan received big help from Navy allot ments But when it came to the stretch only Army and Navy had the tho talent Army for example crushed Notre Dame by such scores as 59 to 0 and 40 48 to 0 if we happen to recall the correct figures Anyway Any way Notre Dame took a bad beating beat ing from Army Through this war period Duke Georgia Tech Alabama Tulsa Oregon Southern California VII VII- lanova and a few others had pretty fair squads But the general average of at 4 F's 4 F's and kids didn't add up too strong ly Michigan had a good team even after losing Bill Dill Daley a former Minnesota star back Pennsylvania did well especially after atter return Will WUl Navy look after college football again Will WUl Army pitch pitchIn In to help helpT Or will any such help be needed For example George Mungers Munger's Pennsylvania team had arranged i ia a rugged schedule for 1951 including including ing Notre Dame and California Pennsylvania had a looking good squad in action last fall fail with a better one all set let for this next sea sea- ea son No one knows what will happen hap pen by next fall Princeton and Cornell seemed to have the best Ivy League material for the 1951 campaign but once again this will be a guess Ray Robinsons Robinson's Place Ray flay Robinsons Robinson's victory over Jake LaMotta has already started a new debate on his place in ring ranking This means the aU time all time spot the new middleweight champion should draw in ratings Wearing two crowns on his head at the same moment in two of the tougher divisions is only part of the story Robinson has been forced to shed one title the welterweight top piece but he is still the best welterweight welterweight welter welter- weight there is is The LaMotta affair should lift lUt the present middleweight king still WI higher among those now tossing leather back and forth But there is isan isan isan an even bigger argument at hand How blow would you rank Robinson with Harry Greb Stanley Ketchel Mickey Walker Tiger Flowers lower Marcel Cerdan and Tony Zale Zale-to Zale to mention only a few in the tile middleweight middleweight middle middle- weight picture |
