Show LOCAL BOY ON MVYTEAM On the "A" squad of the blue and gold clad football "Hellcats" of the Alameda, California Naval Na-val Air station are two Utah athletes, Joe Tangaro of Price and William Groves of Bingham Canyon. Both of the Utah men were the navy starting tackles last Saturday against the "Devil Dog" Marine pigskin champions from Quantico, Va., in Balboa stadium, San Diego, Calif. Playing Play-ing before a crowd of over 20,000 partisan sailors, marines, and civilian spectators the navy enlisted en-listed players from Alameda, and enlisted marine players from Quantico ' settled the all-navy football championship for 1947. The marines won by a score of 26-0. Representative champions in eastern service competition the Quantico marines clinched the Atlantic navy title on last December De-cember 6 by defeating the Jacksonville, Jack-sonville, Florida Naval Air Station Sta-tion team in Jacksonville's "Alligator "Alli-gator Bowl". In the pacific area the Alameda "Hellcats" won their regional ti- tie on last December 13th in San Diego when they defeated the runner up all stars of Pacific fleet destroyers from Hawaii. Prior to the all navy championship champion-ship game in San Diego the marine ma-rine team went through a 12-game 12-game schedule against Atlantic service and college teams losing only to Washington and Lee University of Virginia 13-0. The sailors in an 11-game schedule sche-dule out west had previously lost one game 33-14 .to the California Cali-fornia Ramblers of the University Univer-sity of California at Berkeley. Groves is the son of Mr. and Mrs. D. D. Groves of 220-4th East street, Copperton. He won two letters in football while attending attend-ing Bingham high school before enlisting in the navy. Joe "Terrible Tang" Tangaro played 4 years at Carbon high school in Price and was selected as an all-Utah state player. At the IJniversity of Utah in 1945 was a Big Seven conference selection se-lection at tackle and received honorable mention on the Associated Asso-ciated Press All-American selections se-lections of that year. After enlisting in the navy Joe played service football in 1946 at the Naval Air Station, Pensa-cola, Pensa-cola, Fla., and was selected on the all-navy east coast team of 1946 for his outstanding play at tackle. He is at present a navy st matp. His mothpr. Mrs. Agatha Randazzo resides in Price. Pre-game and half-time events in Balboa stadium included a massed service band of 150 pieces piec-es with majorettes and cheer leaders. The stadium was decorated decor-ated in a nautical theme by sailors sail-ors from the naval station. Fifteen Fif-teen Pacific coast radio stations broadcast a play by play description des-cription of the game and news services filmed highlights. A full length motion picture was filmed film-ed by navy photographers. "Jiggs", the very pugnacious bulldog mascot of the Marine Corps growled threats at the seat of the skin tight football trousers trous-ers of the "Devil Dogs" all thru the game score, Marines 26 to the sailors 0.
