Show Dinosaur Evidences Profuse in Yellow Cat Area of Arches National Monument Dy By FRANK and Paleontologist In rge Ch I When I first arrived at the Arches National Monument I was as struck to find red beds and other terri ten evidences tory territory which indicated that dinosaur evi- evi dences might be found there In a a short time Mr V P Walker gave Jack JackI YouVon a small dinosaur ur tall tail vertebrae In excellent preservation which Mr Walker had found several years rears before when chasing a deer but search as Sc c might the depoSit which Mr i hn n ch nd could not be found by any of our party though four trips acre ere made there using as good a map of the region as Mr Walker could furnish from memory Then the survey party by chance ran across gray dinosaur bones In 1 i anda gray sandstone ledge east a mile and a Quarter from from Mary Marv s Wolf Volf ranch cabin Further search at that I location and hunting e abo abos e and below thoroughly failed to reveal any more I bones so that tiny deposit was as passed I up no and search made mide here I liberal libera We were rewarded b finding a lib lib- eral era sized deposit of dInosaur bones on the dIvide a long half mile west est oX of Wolf cabin on the very crest of the divIde It seems gOOd Judgment to think that the deposit was as originally made In soft material which had hadorn worn orn away ay thus letting the bones come to their rest at this spot Bones could be found here almost anywhere here within a radius of a hundred feet most of them were ere fragmentary chipped ot of by frost trost I and erosion agents what hat Is called badly weathered material One bone ho hoc c er nearly the sIze of an ordinary I a ales ater bucket was found presumably a leg bone near an end but so I eroded that identification Is impossible This bone weighs probably 60 to 75 POunds and is well worth the trip up u from Wolf cabin so EO see I piled UP an estimate of pounds of bones or so setting them nicely on a arock I rock so that tourists and others would be Pleased with the sight and put th thc whole under the charge of 1 J M with strict Instructions that none of them shall be given away I or any pcr person on allowed to ste steal l any fragment they are are- public property and sub subject to United States law ag rent oval Then down Il to tow ard Wolf Volf cabin Keith Wright found a few scattered bones Indicating that the beds there shoula should i for be other thoroughly searched and studied I I Mary Marv had told me ot of small fossils In some dark brown shale close to where here his fence meets the wash Geologist J C Anderson discovered this bed one erie Saturday and got many specimens taking me there a day or two later The fossils are Upper upper from the size 0 of a Pen pea up to butof larger than a Brazil nut bl bi but of the superficial appearance of uni- uni Specimens acre ere sent to the United States Geologic Survey for Identification which wm will be In- In I Included eluded In the report of the region I This deposit by air line Unc Is not over a long along mile and a half from the Arches rector ector ot of the monument and will prove of Interest to those thase scientifically in- in dined Cat Arel Arc Rich fIlch l in Dinosaur Material orthe Study of the Yellow Cat sector or of the Arches Monument be- be before tore fore that area sas as disclosed that the territory was as favorable for finding dinosaur material and I was Impatient to isit It So I got per per- mission permission downIn from Mr Balsley to bed down In one of the abandoned cabins and had Packer dump rue me dean on there alone to try It out outI I was as richly rewarded by finding more than 0 a dozen dosen major deposits of b bones mes The inc re region on is replete with much V bones some are quite frag fragmentary with ero erosion but I got I ye vo voi i fine I specimens of fair size one n ver- ver vertebras vertebrae about six Inches In ant and the other a nearly full c ass oss see sec lion tion section ot of a leg bone the sue of a small stoic pipe in dIameter and about eight Inches long ot of a beautiful color and fine state of preservation I left in the office c cibin under the I charge of I t a few I the best from among them for his can on use to prove to tourists and others I that the region was as worth a visitation Ero Cro ion of lellow Cat Area The Yellow Cat area Is beautifully eroded from a scientific POint of view 1 Twin In Buttes rising rather abruptly deeply so that much surface abruPtly I q epo exposed ed alternate lasers ers of capping rock OCk or ledges with Mancs shale in t t ge 1 I age fo oJ ur and t i 15 Co 0 cut by gullies that miles upon miles mUes ot of surface is Presented which should be thoroughly worked with Ith the hop of imbedded finding some one or more bones im bedded to sen sene e as a lead for future digging In that area I caw aw more dIDo bones than In any other region ever visited thou though h in other places I have tion preservation found a better state stale ot of I I I I The slightly tinted pale green tints of the of the soft material are varied with red and purple so that the sight is pleasing to the C ee e not only of the but to the casual vIsitor as well aswell The rich red bro ns merge harmoniously with the mauves the pale greens lending a pleasing appear appear- ance appearance to tt-e tt whole I leber Heber Christensen had Or ked for I several years with the mining opera opera- operations at Yellow Cat and as aas thorough thoroughly ly familiar with the dl dIstrict In hi sinking a haft chaft at one time fo vanadium ore he had run across a dinosaur bone Imbedded and not to disturb It he had changed the angle of the shaft to go co around It There In heavy sandstone solidly imbedded was as this bone He had told us of it so 50 I went to the re- re mon glon remon and I arranged that he and Mr and Jack YouVon should Join jom me mc on Wednesday and lead me to that th bone hene 1 I i bone is 15 bout four feet teet long one longone shot of The he powder had fractured tl the e larger end squarely across arid and that part is 15 now gone but there is 15 left or of it about four feet with ith a major dl di lit diameter ameter ot of its oai o shape ot of about nine I inch's mid and minor a diameter of about six sh Inches The surface of the bone Is well ell preserved a small section of It was broken out with mining but Heber had k kept pt it and fitted It In place so that what hat is 15 now exposed of the bone Is aU all Intact with Uh the ex- ex exception ot of the larger Joint end sho off Aff bv liv po poder der It Is a very rich find and a I ht elf neff worth Irth seeing not only to the scientist but to my Iny one It rs is ed In ly rare In that usually dinosaur bones are found In softer material material- the sales and red beds but this one is In a vein of vanadium ore solidly Imbedded in massive sandstone About four feet above It Is a fragment of another bone though smaller which a ashot I shot had disclosed also In a vanadIUm streak and Iso In the solid rock That is exceptional Never before have I encountered so many fragments though I have fortuna fortunately ly found bones In a better state of preservatIon It If time and willbe funds will permit the district will be gIven a more thorough working ith the hope of a bon bone or bones imbedded thus being a lead to a scientIfic party visiting the region sly for the purpose of digging an entire out 1 such can be found remains et ct our party the working out of the R of the Arches 1 so far our erk has been o 0 the scenic end but other than a at s wor Wl cabin and arother at Yellow Cat 0 fInds of any ony importance have Jt be made A small fragment Of pottery wa-s wa found by one ot of inI the men close to Willow And e hao e also to work Salt creek dreek flom Wolf cabin down to the Courthouse river and the upper end of Court Court- house draw which was as formerly rich In richIn Indian material J If not aU all removed by diggers by this time Two Tho mummies were ere once found there and I will give one dollar to the first person a ho can provide me with n a photo of nf either I getting a photo or of them myself it if they ar ard still In fri or Moab ThIs offer will Vm be fulfilled with so pleasure bring in to the TImes Independent office information for my uSe and I will avail of It and gladly y p
