Show I A BIG TREE PROJECT I t Another large government project has been planned as a re- re result result sult of the disastrous drought m in the middle west It IS no less than that of plantIng a shelter belt of trees mIles wide and 1000 mIles long m in an effort to counteract to some extent e the de- de e effects of westel western n winds DurIng perIOds of e leme drought such as has been e thIS summer these winds carry away the top soil and pel 1 de- de destroy stroy shoy the fertility of the ground E Experiments on a small scale scaleby scaleby by government scientists lead them to belIeve that a windbreak I such as IS beIng planned w will l greatly reduce thIS soil erosion by winds and retard the evaporatIon of mOIsture from flom the ground According to a map prepared by the Forest Service this bar bar- barrier barrier rier of trees would be planted from the CanadIan line extend through the Dakotas Nebraska Kansas Oklahoma and into northern north north- northern ern Texas The trees would be planted m in belts feet wIde with witha a one mIle strIp of farming land between belts of which there be covering a total wIdth of mIles The project would require about 10 years m in which to com com- complete complete the plantIng and the estImated cost of the experiment IS The area to be planted to trees would be about acres which would be leased rented or bought from its owners by the government offIcIals assert that the fun full effect of the proposed tree belt should be felt in about 15 |
