Show CANAL SCHEME OPPOSED in a report containing 22 specific reasons for its opposition a committee of the chamber of commerce of the state of new york has gone on record as definitely opposing the proposition to spend million dollars of american taxpayers money on the st lawrence canal project the report declares that it is inconceivable that the united states should undertake a huge investment in a foreign country canada where our interest either in transportation or in water power would be only 15 per cent it points out that the project would place the government in direct competition with our railroads and power industries with great detriment to their thousands of american employees at the same time benefiting canadian interests to the detriment of the united states the report was prepared jointly by the committees on internal trade and improvements and on harbors and shipping while the precise terms of the recent treaty with canada on this matter and the economic results of carrying out the plan are not clear to the average layman it has seemed to us that to engage in an enterprise of such cost and of such uncertain benefits to the united states would be of doubtful expediency to say the least at any rate the whole subject should be very thoroughly considered from every angle before we spend approximately half a billion dollars wrung from already heavily burdened american taxpayers in furtherance of this questionable scheme |
